Update santa brought me a bad axle 200

I got a chance today to see what all the noise was in the rear end.As I took off the hubcap it was very clear what had gone wrong. Are you ready for this, loose lug nuts, duh! When I changed over to snows a few days ago I used my electric impact gun to remove and install the lugs.As a rule I never use it to tighten the lugs for fear of having them too tight. So it looks like I did not tighten them enough to begin with. The rim is toast, the holes are oval. All the lugs wil have to be replaced.Had I driven maybe 10 more miles they would have surely snapped. The good part is each lug is so close to shearing that I could snap them with a pair of pliers then tap them out.The install will be a different story, maybe someone has a tip for me.
So if you hear a clunk, rattle in the rear and you recently removed a tire for whatever reason, check the lugs first to make sure they are tight.
Thank you all who replied to my post.Looks like the 87 240 will get the new radio after all.
Nelson

Update santa brought me a bad axle 200

The last time I got wheel studs and nuts was at Advance auto, don't mess with the "kits" on display, ask for them at the counter. Here is a link to a previous post that I made a while back, part numbers are included for the wheel studs in the picture link.

You were very lucky by the way! I would be curious to know where the black grease came from that you mentioned in your original post.

My thinking is that it was a thin film of metal shavings from the steel wheels, studs and lugs all contributing.Keep in mind the roads were still wet and I was driving in the right lane[puddle lane] all the way home.Once I get the new lugs and studs,I'll take it for a test drive to see if I notice anything else out of place.

Slipping the new lug studs in from behind the flange is doable--but when I do it that way I use a spacer collar and strong air impact to run a lug nut on (flat side in) to pull the studs through. It's not that much more work after you've removed the rotor to pull the axle and press the new studs in properly. You can replace the inner seal easily at that point--the outer seal requires splitting the bearing retainer collar and pressing the bearing. Not a job to do unless there was a bearing problem. An axle bearing kit with all four pieces should run about $55 from various parts sources. -- Dave

Since it appears that I did not have an axle problem I will use the short cut method of pulling the stud with the nuts.No need for any extra work. With my luck something then will go wrong with the axle.
