245 loses power 200

I have an 85' 245, manual transmission (non turbo) that is giving me a problem. While driving along (speed doesn't seem to matter) I will lose power. I'll pull to the side of the road, (at this point the engine idles fine and rev's fine) turn it off and wait 5 min. and I'm good to go again. I can go 20 -30 miles or not. Sometimes only a few miles before it happens again. I've put in new plugs, wire, cap, roter, coil, - engine runs great! I'm thinking fuel pump (its noisy) or pressure regulator but those are expensive items - $200+ - to replace. I cant keep putting that kind of money in just trying to find the problem. Anyone have this happen or know whats going on? I'd really appreciate any input...
Thanks
Terry

You may have a clogged cat, due to internal failure. The core shifts from road vibration, blocking the exhaust path. Not enough to stall the car, but enough to keep it from making any power. Shut it off, start it up, and the rocking from the engine start may be enough to vibrate the guts of the cat free again.

With the engine off and the exhaust cool enough to touch, shake the pipe aft of the cat laterally. If you hear something loose inside the cat, that's your problem. This isn't a positive test, just a diagnostic.

I had a problem like that with the deal did not find and another company missed. My issue was the air box thermostat. no power after it warmed up and also burned up 2 mass air sensor. it worth a look. Greg

if you can hook up a fuel pressure gauge at the rail in such a way you can see the gauge face up against the windshield, then close the hood and tie it down so the back of the hood does not crimp the gauge tubing then go for a drive and see what happens to the fuel pressure under different loading conditions.

this will pretty definitively isolate every device to rear of the gauge and confirm or eliminate.

it sounds difficult to hook up but it really is not and worth the time it will take to rule out pump troubles.

Hi Ted,

It sounds difficult to hook up. Like theory. But, if one could devise and document a practical means of doing this on our non-race-car 240's, diagnosis would indeed be simplified.
