Update + Question: 240 Classic Won't Start after Rain 200 1993

Hi, folks.

I had posted earlier about our 240 wagon that wont start after a rain. The car is parked, not driven in the rain. My (new) mechanic and folks suggested the fuel pump relay may be the culprit. Perhaps water was getting into the area in front of the passenger's knees by the ECU? Others suggested a full tune-up.

Anyway, I changed out the relay, sprayed water over the front end, and then took the car through a no-hands, high-pressure car wash. It starts right up! So... I suppose it might be the relay? The next rain will provide the ultimate test, but we'll be on the road to SF on Monday.

There were two areas that were wet, perhaps worth noting: 1) the area around negative battery terminal; 2) the upper left corner of the engine bay, where a wire goes into the firewall.

Any further ideas for troubleshooting/testing?

Best regards,
Esteban

    Update + Question: 240 Classic Won't Start after Rain 200 1993

Update: So, the old relay looked OK, but after the car wash, and after the car ran well during the rain in the Central Valley, I thought I had solved the problem.

It rained last night up here in East Bay, and now the car won't start.

So... I think a tune-up and/or ignition coil may be the problem?

Start the engine after dark and look at the cap and plug wires for sparks. The problem is likely bad plug wires or cracked cap. Replace the cap, rotor, plugs, and plug wires.

The fuel pump relay is usually mounted upside down, this combined with a leak from above can cause water to enter the case and accumulate during prolonged rain, turn the relay over. Inspect the old relay, the stains and damage will be obvious when you pop the case off. If you still have a problem give it a tune up paying special attention to plugs and plug wires.
