1992 240 LSD Options 200 1992

Still have the car referred to in this thread:

Differential Noise on Hard Turns - 240

This is the unit pictured as LSD 3.1 on Anthony Hyde's LSD page:
http://people.physics.anu.edu.au/~amh110/Diff_LSD/diff_lsd_volvo_dana.htm

Fear the LSD has given up a couple more chunks of spider gear, as the rear has begun making bad noises and hopping on slow turns as though the diff is locked. Have plans to bring it in to the mechanic this coming week. A few questions...

Anyone know if the open diff Dana 30 spider gears are the same as the LSD ones? They all have 10 teeth based on the photos I've seen.

If I can't save the Power-Loc, anyone know if the TrueTrac Jeep front units can be used in the rear? I've been all over everything I can find on line but it's not clear whether the TrueTrac front units (all that's available for 3.54 down) are set up for standard or reverse rotation.

I'll call Randy's or Reider next week (of course my mechanic will probably know the options as well) but figured this posting might provide some Christmas Cheer to the LSD crowd.

Hi,

This site below contains excellent information about the various Volvo LSD's and the ALD found in the later cars (93 only for 240 iirc). Also good information there about the Truetrac 912A588 which fits the Volvo 1031 and how to make the speedo pickup work on that unit.

Hello
seems a cheap way out may be found in this thread, can be done with JY parts.

The half shafts almost always break on the power-lok's from the vintage used on the Volvo's. Later half shafts where improved. Dana no longer makes the rebuild kit but you should be able to find an aftermarket one. Its all Dana 30 except the ring and pinion gear and 2 pinion bearings which Volvo upgraded to a larger size. The $233 kit comes with 4 spider gears, 2 half shafts and all new clutches.

Yes indeed I had the cover off yesterday and the cross shafts are both broken, and the side gear on the passenger side has just about no teef.

You think those kits are still available from drivetrain.com? If so I'll need one but only if I can get the side gears too. SAM in Sweden lists the side gears but I haven't checked if they stock them. Darn long holiday weekends!

Are you sure its a Dana Power Lok and not a Eaton G80? I didn't think they used the PL much after 1991.

Drivetrain.com still list the rebuild kit for the Dana 30 Power Lok. (706009X) Its the same part number as the one I ordered 4-5 years ago. It comes with the clutch kit, half shafts, 4 spider gears and 2 side gears. It doesn't include the carrier bearings, pinion bearings or shims. If you need bearing part numbers I could get them for you.

Jeep TrueTrac 200 1992

The TrueTracs that fit Jeeps are 27 spline, don't remember what the spline count for the 240 rear axle is. Rotation is determined by the cut of the ring and pinion the carrier is the same. I'd call Randy's Ring and Pinion or another vendor to check the application data.

Start cheaply: drain the old oil out. No need to remove the cover, just pull the bottom (6 o'clock) bolt out - that serves as a drain. Clean off around the fill plug and remove it as well.

Refill with fresh gear lube (GL5 in 90 weight; 80W in cold zones) AND add the limited slip oil additive. Most parts stores carry it; comes in about a 4 oz tube. You'll need close to a quart and a half of gear oil for the diff, but add the LSD additive before you top off the diff.

Back when my '92 245 was new to me, I changed all the fluids without knowing I had a No-Spin diff. The axle started banging on tight turns (like a corkscrew ramp in a parking garage) - scary sounding! Eventually I found the tag on the diff telling me what I had. So then I did my research and put in Mobil 1 gear lube, supposedly fine for limited slip axles, no additives needed... WRONG! Once I changed to regular gear lube and the additive, all was well.

You might be having other problems, but your symptoms sound exactly the same as what I experienced.

Red Line makes a fluid suitable for LSD. It is synthetic with additives premeasured. I used it for the '73 140 rear I rebuilt with a '76 265 LSD added. Works fine. -- Dave

Good info - thanks! The diff is about due for an oil change.

Your cheapest option is a used rear end instead of repairing yours. Some of the 1993 240s had locking rear ends. You might check into getting one of those.
