Help - Daughter stranded on Sawmill Pkwy, NY 200 1988

My daughter just called crying. Betsy died and she and my daughter are stuck along the highway.
The engine cranks over and everything else seems in working order
State Farm assistance truck stopped by and though the gas guage says the 1/2 full they put 2 gallons in and it still didn't start up. I had my daughter check the fuses and she says they are okay. I replaced the fuel pump relay last year as well as the timing belt and tensioner and readjusted the tensioner.
Per my daughter, their is no resistance or pressure on the gas pedal. It easily goes right down to the floor. Any ideas? AAA is going to tow it to the nearest garage. 1988 245 "Betsy" 150,000

Help - Daughter stranded on Sawmill Pkwy, NY 200 1988

Good news! My daughter and "Betsy" are now back home, safe and sound. After reading all the posts from you guys, I left Easton, PA at 6:30PM and just now got home (12:30AM). Traffic was backed up big time at the George Washington Bridge going into NY, on Christmas eve no less. Got lost a bit in NYC but once I got there, it took me less than 10 minutes to get Betsy running again. My daughter was right about one thing. No pressure on the gas peddle. Felt weird so I opened the hood. The throttle cable did pop off and I reset it, but that wasn't the problem as she still didn't start. Took the cap off the distributer and had my son watch the rotor as I cranked over the engine. Rotor turned okay so timing belt was okay as I suspected. Re-installed the cap after inspecting same. Still no start. Popped out the 25 (?) amp blade fuse and found light corrosion which I touched up with emery clothe. Pulled the two small wires off the ignition coil. They were much more corroded. Reattached wires and tried starting Betsy again and she started right up!!! Daughter called AAA and canceled towing and we drove back to Easton. At 12:06AM my 13 year old son looked over at me and said, "Merry Christmas, Dad". I said the same to him. Thank you to all who helped me out before I left. Your advices will no doubt be the best Christmas present of 2009!
    Thanks again,

      Marc,
This was a great save, I think that now the kids assume
you can fix anything....you came off like a champ.

Your son sounds like a future 240 owner, someone has
got to keep them going after we are gone.

Merry Christmas and a Wonderful New Year.

Joseph in New Mexico (no snow today, maybe next year)

The throttle cable may have broken or simply came off the pulley, but it should start.

Disconnect the connector to the AMM (key off) and see if it starts?

Put a jumper on the left side of fuses 4 and 6 to force the fuel pumps to run and bypass the relay.

25 amp fuse near the battery, check the fuse and corrosion at the holder and battery connector.

Sounds like throttle cable linkage has disconnected somewhere under the hood.
It happens rarely, but possible. Engine should still start, however.
Try rolling the fuses in their holders. Maybe oxidation? NY weather?
The problem is probably simple and easy to locate after opening the hood.

Did the car die slowly or suddenly?

    Wishing you best of results.

      Car died suddenly.
My 21 year old daughter is very limited in the mechanical department.
She has been towed off the highway by a non-AAA towing Company.
We have AAA Plus and they are looking for someone to tow back home to Easton, PA. Roughly 90 miles. Otherwise it may be towed Saturday. I'm going to drive out now and pick her up. Thanks for the help.

        Hello,

I vote for failed timing belt.

Check and see if the camshaft or distributor is moving when cranking.

88, check the fuse in the engine bay by the battery before anything else. 1/2 tank plus two gallons should be above the point at which a failed in-tank pump or connector hose on the pickup would be a problem. 3/4 tank will get you past that. Sounds like the main fuel pump may have died. Time to jump power to it at the fuse box and see if it runs by listening for it right below the rear seats. It's very clear when it runs--good solid buzz.

Your comment about "no resistance at the gas pedal" is confusing. May I ask what you are working on with that? If the accelerator cable were broken there would be little resistance, but the car would still idle. "Car Cranks". When it cranks, are you getting the usual chuga chuga, or does it spin rapidly when the key is turned? If so, the timing belt may have broken, though if it was changed last year, that's unlikely. Any other symptoms?

Hope that helps! Feel free to e-mail, dpsam@sbcglobal.net. Help is a little hard to come by on X-mas eve.

I'm confused about the gas pedal too. It may be that my daughter is confused as she is quite upset. Yes, it gives the usual chuga-Chuga, I could hear it over the cell phone. I had her put the gas in just to see if it was a deteriorated connector hose to the tank pump. Many have been sucking air. She was going up an incline when it dided. She is now being towed. No garages are open.
She may spend an extra night at her friend's house tonight and I will drive out with my tools tomorrow. I live in PA. Have to cross NJ to get to NY. Yes... This is bad timing (no pun intended). Thanks for the response.

"Going up an incline" may be more significant than you think- I've had this problem in my 83 240 GL, it would conk out going uphill, particularly if I'd just been going downhill a minute or two earlier. It was especially bad during wet weather. Letting the car sit for 30-60 minutes usually resulted in a successful start-up. I remember cancelling a tow truck once for this reason.

A new cap and rotor ended the problem (could it have really been this simple?), plus the AMM croaked around that time as well and was replaced. The 25 amp fuse is of course the first place to check if you didn't upgrade to IPD's waterproof version, look for corrosion there.

I've never had a repeat of this problem and it has been several years.

Cap and rotor replaced this past summer.
Will check all fuses when I get out there tonight.
          Thanks for the help.

Hi Mark. Tell you what, I'll be around tomorrow if you want to call for some input. 661dash267dash2773. I'll bet money on the main pump. Did it die at speed, or on re-start?

          Thanks!
Died while traveling on upgrade on highway.
I checked the pumps several moths ago at the fuse box (jump test)as main pump was singing a bit. Both were working. It could have finally died.

          Thanks again.

          Mark
