Last Duetts to USA 1967 444-544

Hi and holiday greetings to all.

I just finished reading thru the posts on the 544 Model G discussion and it reminded me of the last group of Duetts (210) brought to the USA. Since I have one of those cars, I was (and still am) interested in how many, why etc. about that last group of Duetts imported to US.

In a letter I received from Volvo many years ago in response to my inquiry, they indicated that approximately 200 Duetts were brought in in 1967. If I remember correctly they were M models (211341xx).

So, now 40+ years on, does anyone have any information to substantiate the approx 200 67 Duetts imported? How about why they even bothered (although Im glad they did). Somebody told me they all had the tan color interior that year, regardless of paint color. From the cars Ive seen, it seems that the predominant color of that group of cars was white, although I know other colors came in as well.

Best to you all.
Bob

    Bob,

At the time my father was GM of Volvoville on Long Island. I was 13 years old. I do remember the trucks loaded with P210's still coming in and wondering how they could still be in demand. Strange as it sounds, despite my nearly single-minded interest in F1 and 2 seaters, those P210's made a very lasting impression on me. That's the reason I have one now.

I don't remember any problems with selling them and they never stayed on the lot for long. In fact, I don't remember seeing them in the 'front line' at all. I believe they were all sold on or before arrival.

For what it's worth, Volvo continued the P210 through the 1968 model year in Sweden, outfitted with the B20. I've often wondered if the Duett I have now crossed my father's lot. Not unlikely since my car was an East coast car originally and Volvoville was a high volume dealership. If anyone knows of a way I can trace the dealership of original sale, I'd appreciate the lead.

While in Europe in 78/79 I bought a 1970 duett that had been a Police canine vehicle. Drove it from Sweden to Barcelona and back. B20 single carb. Shoulda kept it.

        Danny,

I think you're right! I once made half that ride (~Cologne > Barcelona) in a Renault (don't recall the model# but it had a way cool shifter sticking straight out of the dash!). I've never been north of Germany but definitely should put that on my list... Thanks for the inspiration.

Just curious Kai, whats your chassis #? Mine is 89717.

By the way Kai, do you have a piece of sales lit for the 67? If not, send me your address off line, and I'll send you a repro I had done many years ago.

Best to you for the new year.
      Bob

        Hi Bob,

My chassis # is 89649; there's only one listed between yours and mine on the PV Register. Interestingly, most of the 210'as on the Register seem to be in NY state.

I couldn't access your email through this site. Thank you for your offer re the sales literature.

        Kai

I didnt have any luck responding to you via email (via this site) either, Kai. I clicked the notify by email box in this posting, but who knows what that will do for us.

I expect by that time, they were regarded mainly as vehicles for utilitarian, commercial type application...hence the spartan interiors. panel wagon? I've never seen one, but I've heard they exist.

News to me that they continued to be imported into '67. I thought '65.. but... If I had a flower delivery service or a plumbing company or what have you in '67.. it would be my vehicle of choice. The Duett was the last of Volvos offerings that would be suitable for such tasks... and since they still made them for other markets, why not. I expect it was the new safety standards that came along in '68 that put an end to their import
