Source for catalytic converter for 93 240? 200

Sorry, but can't handle the price of an OEM catalytic converter for my 93 240 (over $800). Any advice on a source for a replacement. NAPA asked if my car has an EGR valve or not. I thought all 93's had an EGR valve. Did 93's come either way?

Great thanks to all for the great suggestions. Decided to give Eeuroparts a try. Called to verify whether or not their "original Volvo" part was indeed the case. According to the sales rep, it is. So, for the $131 they are asking, free freight included, I placed an order. They don't keep it in stock, so it will probably be 10 days before it is shipped. Will update this thread once it arrives and is on my non-California 93 240, which BTW, does not have an EGR valve. Best of new years to every member of this terrific group. Daryl

If that Cat you just got from eEuroparts is really Volvo #8551608, your $131.00 price was a phenomenal bargain!

Tasca Volvo's already discounted price is $$221.09 for that part ($295 list), which is listed in Volvo's quick reference book under "Quality Replacement Converters".

I've heard of "loss leader" pricing, but $90.09 below the dealer's discount is unheard of—and thus a bit hard to believe.
Please share any confirming details as to Part#, ID marks, packaging, etc.

Hi Bruce,

Just double-checked. Part #8551608. Price $131.27 delivered to my door. I am satisfied with the price and will buy from eEuroparts again when I have a need.
Wish I had heard of them before, as they would have had my business sooner. Another thanks to Oleseahorse (Marty W) for the suggestion to buy from these folks.

Daryl

NEW catalytic converter part number 91- 93 240 200 1993

Hi Daryl,

I suppose you have the cat installed now. That 4-day down time prevented me from getting back to ask you again about ID info on the cat itself. I'm very interested because that 8551608 is a new Volvo part number, which seems very unusual for a car that's so long out of production.

All I've found out so far is that 8551608 first appeared last Fall. See "New Products : Volvo" HERE. [Scroll down to September listings]

Tasca does list BOTH numbers...
=> 8551408 $352.68 $0.00 $263.63 (original #)
=> 8551608 $295.77 $0.00 $221.09 (new#) $131 at eEuro

And if you put 8551608 in the "Search by OEM Part" (click twice) at this high-end parts house you'll see it priced at $354.14!!!

Did you happen see the letters DEC (Diversified Environmental Catalysts) on the cat by any chance?

NEW catalytic converter part number 91- 93 240 200 1993

Bruce,

Yes, during the BB outage the new cat was installed on the 240 sedan. So, didn't get a chance to look more closely at any numbers on it. While I did not measure any dimensions, I did look it over while up on the rack. From a visual perspective, the new cat seemed the same length as the original, but to the naked eye, it appeared to be just a smidge smaller in diameter. It could have been an illusion, but I'm fairly quick at noticing dissimilarities, so I'll trust my judgment. Other than that, I couldn't detect any differences, at least externally. Internally, I couldn't say if any corners have been cut. The direct fit unit installed perfectly. No modifications necessary. All in all, I'm more than satisfied with it and would buy another to be used my 240 wagon when it becomes necessary.

NEW catalytic converter part number 91- 93 240 200 1993

Thanks for the reply, Daryl. I guess my quest to learn who makes this new "genuine" part for Volvo remains mystery. So far I can confirm only "DEC" (an "aftermarket" manufacturer) in Van Nuys, CA.

It's a mystery to me...
1) Why Volvo needed to add a 3rd Cat version to the replacement parts list for a car that's been out of production for so long,
2) How eEuroparts can sell it for $90 less than Tasca's discounted price, and
3) Who makes the Tasca and eEuro versions of PN 8551608?

Wish I could shed more light on this for you, but can't right now. If this cat works out fine, and has a decent life span, I am not going to be overly concerned as to its origin of manufacture. The price is right for installing on an old car. Yes, it is a beloved 240....but its still an old car....

Hi Daryl, Lucid,

Yup, I'd agree. A phenomenal bargain. Now get this. I just checked again and the prices is not $131, it's $124.36. And free shipping to boot.

If I wasn't so broke, I'd pick up a spare.

Marty

Hello Daryl,

My numbers could be off a little, you can verify, but I checked Tasca which was $221 Volvo
I also checked FCP at $175

Eeuroparts has Volvo at $131.

I've used a Davico model in the past which, as I recall, fit perfectly. I could no longer find Davico except some 2004 website for their outfit. I'd go for the Eeuro but quiz them insofar as possible. All my 93's have the spin flange - no EGR - so I'm likely yours does as well. Just make sure you have a non EGR model.

Good luck and let us know how you made out.

I got a magnaflow cat and pipe (direct fit) for $100 shipped on ebay. It is a fixed flange and bolted up fine.

You need to check if your downpipe uses a flat or swivel flange to determine the right cat to get. Its not likely that you have EGR. The EGR cat on my 1990 uses a swivel flange and is larger than normal.

fcpgroton has a special till 12/31. code is decpromo. 10% off and free shipping over 99.
