Suggestions for plugging roof rack holes in a 245 200

Two years ago i plugged the remaining holes in my 245's roof, after removing the original roof rack, with the rubber grommet/plug kit from IPD. The Texas sun dries and shrinks that rubber up fast and I'm on my second kit. They also leak after a few months.

Since I'm financially I'm a few years away from ever painting the vehicle (and permanently patching the holes), has ANYONE out there found a solution that is aesthetic, water proof and relatively long-lasting? Please let me know what y'all have come up with.

Jason

Would you like to sell me a couple of the rubber gaskets that go between the rack and the roof, and a couple of the well nuts (the rubber thingies with the threaded inserts inside?)

I decided that using the existing anchors was a better idea. They will take a 1/4-20 fastener. I lifted the edges and put silicone under them. Then I put some silicone into the thread and put truss-head screws into them. Truss are pretty flat. When it was all dry, I painted them with white Rust-O-Leum. I've found it will stick, even to the rubber, for a year or more. In fact the paint comes off the screws more readily than the rubber. One of these days I'm going to paint the whole roof, but for now, they are low enough profile to be mostly invisible. I've never cared for the roof racks. I have a set of 960 Euro-bars. I've often considered mounting them on a 1/8" strip of black painted aluminum that could be fastened down to the old anchors. That might be nice.

I bought a couple bags (100 each?) of black plastic caps, to fill the holes in my 745. They were cheap. (Part of a McMaster-Carr order?) They have worked fine for years.

Give a shout if you want some.

I am unsure of 245 hole diameter. Please let me know... can't just assume 200=700 I suppose.

I'd try exterior polyurethane caulking. Lasts long and is paintable.

I installed my grommets with clear, silicone caulk. They have been fine for a year. If the caulk covers the top of the grommet, I would expect that to provide sun protection. A thin coat is all that is needed and could be re-done every couple of years.

What about dropping the headliner and sealing the a new packet of grommits in with silicone from the inside?

If you ever want to paint the car, I can tell you DO NOT put silicone on it. Silicone and auto paint don't play together well.
