Hepu Water Pump without Fan bolts 200 1989

After I installed the Hepu Water Pump (from FCP Groton),
I realized that they did not come with the 4 fan mounting bolts.
Is there a trick to removing them from the old pump for re-use?
Do I need brand new ones that screw into the pump.
Thanks for any insight.

I finally did manage to get the old studs out using a thin-nosed vise grip (very useful tool). It also took a table vise to hold the water pump, thick gloves, and lots of elbow grease.
Thanks again for all the advice.

I was reading these posts and for the benefit of others to follow--the double nut method is the simplest and least damaging way to remove/install the studs-requires only three tools--(2) 10mm wrenches (or one wrench and one pair of pliers or 10mm socket for tightening the nuts against each other) and one screwdriver blade (to slip between the studs to keep the works from rotating while you crack them loose). As far as I know, all new water pumps for the B21--etc. have to have the studs changed over. -- Dave

aside from the other suggestions. If you look at the Water pump studs, very close to the Pump itself you will notice there are no threads. You can assist the Double Nut idea with a clamped on Vice grip on the unthreaded section of the stud.

Small channel locks or vise grips in the center non threaded section works for me.

Put on two nuts, tightened against each other -- a wrench spanning both will the turn the old studs out. N.M.I. 200 1989

Interesting idea. Thanks.
I'll try that tomorrow.

Go get them at Auto Zone or Napa 200 1989

After posing the same question a few year ago, I went to my local Auto Zone and told them I had an 1989 245 and I was looking for the cooling fan mounting studs for on the water pump. They had them in stock. Cost about $2. They come with the nuts too.
Bring along your old pump and you can eyeball them at the store to see if they match. I'm sure they do.
Mine's been spinning around safely for two years...

Scrounge up a couple of M6 nuts and a proper sized lock washer. Put one of the nuts on a stud followed by washer and hold the first nut securely in place while tightening the second one against the washer. You should then be able to back the stud out with the first nut. Install in the new pump, remove the nuts and washer and repeat for the other studs.

Tedious but effective.

Hello,

I had the same issue years ago. What you need is four studs that screw into the new pump and then attach to the fan. You can use bolts but is a little difficult to attach the fan. The studs are listed as a separate item, or you can try removing them from the old pump.
