Can you "clean up' beaten up aluminum rims?

I just picked up four rims off an late 70's 242.
They're pretty beat up, corrosion-wise (i.e. dull, pitted, etc.)
I'm not looking for showroom quality...can they be cleaned up any?

Depends in large measure just how deep the damage is. If it is superficial you may be able
to polish it out.
