towing a 240 with a tow bar 200

Hi, Has anyone used a tow bar to pull a 240 and where do you hook it up to?

I remove the front bumper by taking out the shock bolts in the engine compartment, one on each side. I then drill and install two lengths of pipe that reach out far enough for a tow bar to connect. If trans is an auto, disconnect at rear flange and tie shaft up to chassis. The ignition key then has to be left in the II position so front wheels can follow. Then you need to connect the 240's tail lights to the tow vehicle. I did this a couple of times between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Once you have this setup it makes any rescue or future tow rental free.

The safest way is to use a car dolly. Always put the front end up.

I've flat towed a number of 240's from NY to NC and back. I remove the front bumper and bolt brackets directly to the piston flanges--have never had a problem.--Dave

I have done it with a towbar I have that hooks over the top back edge with another piece attached to a chain that hooks under the bottom back edge. The chain attaches to a threaded rod and then a nut is drawn down to pull the chain and its hook tight securing the towbar to the bumper.

I have not used it in years as I became aware of the problem of eletrolysis eatting away the aluminum where it is in contact with the steel fastners that hold the bumper onto the plates that attach to the bumper shocks.

Perhaps you have read posts of people reporting their rear bumpers falling off because the aluminum "rots" where it attaches to the steel plates?

If I knew I had to tow a 240 with a towbar I would adapt it so that the bumper shocks would be removed from the car and the towbar would attach to pieces inserted in the "pipe" that the bumper shocks had fit into.

For your own safety and for those around you if you decide to use a towbar figure out a way to put safety chains between the two vehicles that will hold them together if the bumper comes loose.

Randy

Yes, long distance. I suppose it is not a brilliant idea, and not approved, but I would do it again. But look at who's talking. ;-)

Drill holes in the bumper. Bolt on tow bar.

Fill holes when done, with black plastic plugs. No problem.

We made a tow bar that involved removing the bumper and inserting tubing in the bumper shock holes and holes in said tubing to accept the monster bumper bolts. No worries about the aluminium fatigue...
