Duett engine mounts 444-544

If swapping in a B18 or 20 to replace the B16 in a 445, can the B16 engine brackets be used? i.e. do the B16 brackets bolt to the B18 engine? If not what have others used to do this conversion. What are the best rubber pucks to use?
Hopefully there is a straight forward method, using a combination of Volvo parts.
Thanks.

    Duett engine mounts 444-544

I'm bumping this thread only because I've just received a mail from the guy who is doing this swap. I replied saying that I had seen a pic that showed the offset of the rear mount taken from inside the cabin with no floor hiding it. It shows how the rear of the box is positioned in the V of the chassis. I think I saw it here but can't find it. If anyone does have this pic, could they post it for me please. A copy off list would be welcome.
    Thanks.

The B16 steel bracket will bolt straight onto a B18, you then just use normal PV engine mounts from a B18 544 or Duett.

You need to retain the rear mount from the gearbox, it positively locates the engine and box, PV engine mounts are in sheer.

Thanks, that sounds good. I will be passing this info on and hopefully it will stop the owner from considering fitting an MGB engine!!! He does have a nice early 444 as well, so should know better.

If he uses a small starter motor from a 940 he won't even have to use the smaller master cylinder from a B18 engined car, they clash otherwise. The clutch shaft bracket on the bell housing is available from VP for little money.

The B16 radiator cools a B18 just fine.

My car has a B16 nose and radiator, which seems to keep by 2.1L B20 cool even on hot days. I did put a pusher fan on it to help it in stop and go traffic, though.

And putting an MGB motor in a Volvo? I've heard of similar swaps before, but only the other way around. Either motor is rather agricultural in stock form, but at least the Volvo engine is tougher and more durable.

          The starter and MC clash?

I have the early style (er - the 444 style) MC and a plain old B18 starter in mine and there isn't any interference... same with a customer's 444 with B20. Just curious - what's the issue?

          Thanks,

The issue is that on some versions of the early master cylinder with the integral reservoir the master and starter touch. Apparently it's why the B18 master is different from the earlier versions. I know what you mean though, I too have seen them clear.

The later slim starter is an easy fix, all you need to do is drill out one threaded hole and it fits straight on.

              Ah.

Odd that they'd interfere on some cars and not others. Maybe there are/were differences in motormounts or something... though mine has plain ol' PV engine mounts and plenty of room between the starter and MC.

              Thanks for the info -

Yes I've seen posts about fitting the small starter. Easy to find and runs a bit faster to help with starting. It does give more room around the MC if you want to get at it. That's always useful. Most people will have converted the early MC caps to allow use of the remote reservoir so at least you don't have to fumble around down there checking and topping up.

B16 brackets can be used. B18 brackets can't (at least not without modification, but why do that when there's a simple bolt-in solution?).
