de-carbon a catalytic converter? 700 1991

Trying to avoid the $ for a new cat.

Previous owner had one put on at 193k and now 209k.

Keeps failing Cali NO at 15 mph by 100 points.

I took the cat off and the honeycombs look black. I took a propane torch to clean it by getting it red hot and it looks much better.

Will this help?

All other things on the car check out.

Thanks BB

Soap and a hose. And then distilled water or alcohol to avoid deposits. Carbon is VERY water soluble, and the soap (dawn is awesome) will get rid of any possible oil protecting the carbon. Might just work. I wouldn't try to burn it clean - the propane may just give you a bunch of melted whatnot or a new layer of crap on the cat honeycombs - OR maybe it would help, but I know that the water and soap are going to come out clean.

Cat prices supposedly dropped when platinum, etc. dropped to half their values.

Good Luck, let us know if anything works.

Hard to say what affect chemically propane fumes would have on the cat material. Pls repost if it seems to help. Thanks...

If the Cat is bad, that means something else went bad. I would check the o2 sensor and codes. Their are 2 ways to ruin a cat. Poison it or melt it. Something else caused it to go bad though. Food for thought. Good luck.
