OIL SMELL 900 1996

i have a ,oil burning smell coming thru the vents at a stand still but goes away when the car is moving. the pvc/flame trap is not clogged up. the car does burn oil because of bad valve seals but what can be causing the smell. can it be a bad 02 sensor? i am getting a po135/130 code every 60 miles after reseting....96 960 with 177000 miles

Spook offers a great suggestion in the oil filler gasket. That one drove me nuts for awhile. Also check the rear of the head at the cam seals, especially the exhaust side, oil can drip out and run down to the exhaust pipe. Because of the many irregularities in the surface of the engine oil can ooze out in the front and be blown back by the air flowing thru the engine compartment, so some oil leaks can appear in the most unlikely places.

Also check all of the hoses for the flame trap system.

I also have that smell on my 940 turbo. On mine it comes from the right side of engine, down under the turbo somewhere. I do have a small oil leak there, but not enough to drip onto the ground.
I will wait for warm weather to go after it.

OIL SMELL 900 1996

Dear keith,

May this find you well. Code 135, usually means: Injector, cylinder 3, faulty signal. I cannot find, in the Volvo pocket data booklet - Cars 700,850,900 (1991-1996) any Code 130.

Have you checked the oil filler cap seal? If it is aged to the point that the rubber has hardened, oil may be blowing past it, and getting on the exhaust manifold. When the car is moving, the airstream sucks the fumes away from the cabin air intake. If the seal is leaking, you should find oil on the top of the engine.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook
