Fuel pump change out. 200 1990

I can hear the pump starting to make some serious noise, esp with less than a tank of gas.
Of course I want to avoid a break down so I'd like to change either/both pumps before that happens. The car has about 140K on it now.
Which pump is likely to go first? I've changed both on my previous 240 so I'm not afraid to jump in.
It's just a question of when...
Thanks.

It sounds like your in tank pump is the issue. I would start by replacing the rubber connector between the pump and the fuel sending unit and the in tank foot filter. This may stop any extra noise from the main pump.

Check out Art's site for an excellent tutorial. http://cleanflametrap.com/transferPump.htm
