Seat Belt Wiring - cut wire? 200 1993

Hey All,
Traced a recurring short in fuse 16 to the driver's seat belt release button . Push the button and fuse blows. Took apart and don't fully understand wiring. There's 3 wires - gnd and a hot for the light and then a 3rd wire. Does this talk to the chimes and seat belt light? I always thought seatbelt light just came on for a predetermined time - was I wrong? Seems I must have buggered these contacts when I replaced the bulb a while back. Now I just want to cut that 3rd wire and push all the contacts out of the way so it doesn't short but not if that seatbelt light will stay lit or even worse thought is it talks to the SRS system - I'm not messing there ever. Does anyone know the function of that wire? Looks like a little piece of plastic might have been pushed down by the button and separated 2 contacts but they're all bent up now. A cursory look thru Bentleys wiring diagram this morning but could not find the seat belts.
Thanks,
Robb

Hi Robb,

My wiring diagram manual shows a switch to ground, in the driver's belt receptacle using a red wire. The function interrupts the chiming, but not the warning light. Both chiming and light stop after 4-8 seconds, supposedly.

The wiring for the illumination is shown as red, also, and gray for the passenger's clip. That doesn't make sense with my memory of the thing, which is white/red wiring, but these manuals are chock full of errors. Either way, it looks like all you can lose, with the switch contact, is the 8 seconds of chiming.

Thanks Art. I'm in your area so you're in the know when I say - I was going to stop at CR's Jessup on the way home and get another seatbelt piece but it will be a mud fest out there today and 8 seconds of chiming won't ever hurt me... so I'll try to rig it so the light in the button works but the other wire is disable and not bare to shorting...

If you ever get closer to Baltimore, try the yard on Hawkins Point Rd. Compared to Jessup it is paved. And the Volvos (can be) just inside the gate instead of a 1/2 mile hike. Much less crowded too.

Have a good turkey day!

Always keep several get well cards on the mantel. If unexpected guests arrive, they'll think you've been sick and unable to clean.

I love the gravel at Hawkins Point but let's face it the selection of Volvos is not quite as good. And as for the 1/2 mile walk in Jessup - how many junkyards are there where you cross over a "scenic river" to get to the foreign/van/pickup section? You have a great holiday as well!
