Am I crazy? Should I invest $550in 230K turbo? 900

I ordered shocks, struts & bushings
for my '93 940 Turbo wagon @ 230k.
They have never been replaced. Parts
cost: $300, labor $250.

Now I am getting cold feet. What are
the opinions of Turbos? Is it near
end-of-life?

Opinions, please.

At 200K or so most turbo red blocks are on the verge of needing a head gasket job. The symptoms are transient overheating spikes on your temp gauge, topping up the coolant overfil and a little discoloration. One of my Volvos would burst small rubber coolant hoses. A fresh head gasket and as long as you are doing, water pump, timing belt and pulley and you are good for another 100K.
As someone on board has noted, the dissimilar metals of the cast iron head and the alloy aluminum head microscopically rub and shift with heat/cooling cycles. Eventually the head gasket seeps and its time.
It's a little costly but its a must maitenance item for the turbos that run hotter. Many a turbo has been sereted because of the problems associated with the head gasket.
The 1993 wagons are quite nice and well worth keeping.

It's cheaper than 6 months of leasing a VW Jetta.

My 780 TURBO has 210K miles on it .... turbo is still boosting well .... but looks like the seals are done .... thankfully I acquired a spare from a friend parting out another 780 .... Be sure you get the right replacement ... there were many different versions.

I use the $1000.00 rule. Will the repairs be under that amount for the following year & if yes then its a good economical choice for me. Good luck.

    1. does the car now drive well and is it reliable apart from the suspension fatigue?

    2. is the 550 in outlay going to seriously harm your ability pay your bills?

    3. can you replace this car with another of EQUAL reliability, get it registered, titled, insured and pay to fix the little things that ALWAYS crop up in a new purchase for 550?

if you answered yes, no, no ....spend the money .

Absolutely. You should never expect a vehicle of that age to NOT require some investment. If the body and other major components are in great shape, it's a no-brainer.
