Unfreezing an a/c compressor and turning it into an idler pulley 200

Hi all,

My '90 wagon had a dead a/c compressor when I bought it, so the power steering pump belt goes directly to the crank pulley. In this configuration, you can then only use one alternator belt instead of two.

Is there a fairly easy way to un-freeze an a/c compressor and basically turn it into an idler pulley? I'd like to get back to the stock belt arrangement.

There are four ways of getting back to the old configuration that I know of. My 86 ran that way for a year until the AC system was repaired.

The first is to get a Junker compressor with an unbound bearing and replace your locked up one with it. The power steering belt will then run off the compressor pulley and free up the inside V belt slot. You are using the compressor as a pulley basically.

You can get a compressor bypass kit ipd and bypass the compressor slot with a pulley. But that seems to stop at 1985 models and your is a 90.

Fix the AC by putting a new compressor, expansion valve and dryer in. The windows do not fog up all the time in cooler weather and AC in the summer is never a bad thing.

There have been posts about shimming the power steering pump forward, not sure how that will work for you.

    Good Luck,

    Paul
