Reverse shift with M41 Transmission 1800

I have a 1962 P1800 that will shift into reverse without pulling up on the shifter as designed. Is this just a simple fix or will it mean pulling the transmission out? Is it the spring or gate or what? Thanks in advance.

Is there a practical reason to restore the "lift" function or is it fine to just leave it as it is? (My 1800E does the same thing, you can just slide it into reverse as you would any other gear.) It doesn't seem to be a bad thing as far as I can tell..

Reverse shift with M41 Transmission 1800

      Hello,

The original shifter on an 1800E has built into the shift cover a spring loaded ball that has to be depressed when shifting into reverse.

When working correctly, it takes extra effort to move the shifter handle over to the reverse position.

Without some sort of reverse lockout, one might accidentally get reverse when trying to shift into 1st.

If you are trying to downshift into 1st while moving forward and get reverse instead, you might damage the driveline.

It's also, in my opinion, not very safe.. if you have to hit first in haste, that's when you might accidentally go into reverse..

Or if someone unfamiliar drives the car, and doesn't know exactly where first is.. easy to back into someone at a traffic light.

At very least, I would wire in a bright warning light on the dash in line with the reverse lights (assuming they work)...

if you pull your shifter boot off, you should see that the shift lever is held by 4 small bolts. There should be a reverse stop bar/plate that simply prevents the shifter from going that far over without the 'lift'.. that stop could be mis-adjusted, or bent, or just missing... but you'll be able to see when you get the shift boot off.. no need to remove the transmission as I recall.
