Coolant Gauge not working 700

The coolant gauge on an '88 744GLE I work on will work during warm up but then when up to temp drops to zero. I've replaced the thermostat three times and repeatedly bled the system to no avail. Any suggestions?

since the gauge works during warm up and then fails the problem is NOT the wiring or the gauge.

the only variable left is the sensor. the likely fault is the quality of the connection of the wiring internally in the sensor BEFORE the signal reaches the harness connector.

i think you will your problem disappear once you replace thre sensor.

i have had this trouble on 940's.

    Gauge, sensor or wiring.

Where's the sensor? Is it in the radiator or on the block? Wiring to both looks good. I've seen a couple of other 740's with dead coolant gauges. Any way to test the gauge in the instrument cluster?

I have a '90, but I think they are the same. The gauge has its own sensor. It's in the engine block under the intake manifold, right by the knock sensor. Make sure you check the wiring before replacing the sensor.
