Harmonic balancer problem, odd noise? 200 1992

Sorry folks, I hate to post such cryptic questions but I believe the harmonic balancer or the new timing belt tensioner is coming apart. At certain vehicle speeds like 45 and 65 MPH I hear a low frequency rubber like squeal/growl from the front of the car, accessory belts are properly tightened and so on. While sitting still if I put bleen in neutral and rev it to the appropriate RPMs,I hear no squeal. The squeal/growl is in my mind sub-200Hz and rather loud when it happens.

Visual inspection shows that the harmonic balancer pulley portion is lined up with the core but since I'm 300 miles away from home on a contract job, I don't have the tools to validate the timing mark OR remove the timing belt cover to inspect the situation. The timing belt and tensioner are Dayco parts (sorry folks was in a hurry) they are less than a week old, and the harmonic balancer is a three year old Scamtech part with 50K miles.

Besides a slight power loss due to running 10% ethanol fuel, I have not identified any other anomalies. Any thoughts on this spooky sounding growl would be greatly appreciated, car has 286K, engine has 51K miles on it.

I realize this is old now but I wonder if it might be my problem. I have a growl/ buzz/ rumble that increases w/ RPM and under load.

When I had a slipping dampener a few years ago it was a different noise - more like a weird squeal - but perhaps they differ?

The best advice I received to this post was to scribe/paint a line from the center portion of the balancer to the outside pulley portion in a straight line. Then drive it for a while and see if the inner and outer mark still line up, if not, its time for a new balancer! Yep, I needed one!

Problem found, it was the harmonic balancer slipping, Pageda's advice of the painting a line paid off (thank you BTW!) After a 10 minute drive, the lines were off by more than two inches. I also managed to pull back the TB cover after removing the torx screw and the upper bolts, all looks good, so I won't convict Dayco of bad tensioners and timing belts!

Thanks for the input folks, it is greatly appreciated!

ps. That sound was so spooky that if I'd have heard it on Halloween I would have abandoned the car!

Boy that is a real shocker, John.

Amazing that it doesn't wobble under the belts. You would think that it would shake the other components since their rubber mounted.

Just creeps around, huh. Guess the belts keep it from becoming one thick flying saucer.

Thanks Art for the picture. I wondered how it was made on the inside and If there were many very grooves to give the rubber more surface area.

Seems to be only the one, on the outside of the inside of the hub. Plus it's shallow too. Are the Volvo steel parts made the same way or is that a Volvo part?

      Junk rubber for sure.

      John,

How much do they ask or steal for that thing anyhow?

      Who is scam tech?

Who offers their junk for sale?

      Phil

Glad I could help, scamtech rubber strikes again.

I have one of those on a car I don't see too often. MTC was on the bag. I'd better draw a line on it next chance I get. Low pitched growl... I would have expected a high pitched squeal like a belt slipping. Good call, Dan.

That idea may very well have come from you several years ago but as they say the mind is a terrible thing. One thing is for sure I did get the idea right here on the BB.

The only one I have had fail did squeal like a pig.

I've got white-out on a couple of my old ones - original pulleys - but there's 20 years in that rubber. It is a bit unsettling to find one dying at such a young age. But like you say, we're being scammed on the rubber.

Just throwing out an idea. If you suspect the Timing belt to be rubbing, can you pull off the Rubber Plug on the Timing Cover and run your finger over the belt to feel if it's making contact?

Could it be a wheel bearing since you are moving when you hear it?

Try turning the car sharply and see if it changes pitch with a directional load shift.

Timing belt tensioner usually have a high pitch whine.

I have never had a balancer pulley go out. I would think you could see it wobble if the A/C was on. Might try working the tires back and forth while standing still too.

Without tools, and far from home, you need to visit a shop and explain your recent timing belt change. Only you can decide how urgent that is.

On the other hand, you can purchase basic tools for a fraction of what that shop call will cost, and, if you can spare the time to get dirty, check the belt for signs of rubbing, and the tensioner for straight installation and a smooth bearing. To check the bearing, just use the belt itself to load the tensioner spring and lock it in place with the belt loose, so you can spin it. I can't imagine what the crank pulley could have to do with a noise like that, even if somehow it failed to find the key or get torqued properly.

Can you draw a white line across both metal parts and see if the line separates after use or squeal.

      Dan,

Thank you for the idea, I will scribe a mark across both parts to see if they are slipping. I'm sure I would have thought about that eventually but starting another job tomorrow has me in a "pre-occupied" state! And as to Art's comments which I highly respect, I'll do my best to find cheap tools from a local "man shop, ie. Northern Tool" in order to get the TB cover off for inspection.

I just came back in after checking the transmission fluid thinking it might be related to the AW-70, fluid looked fine, nice level brown and "foamy"... JUST KIDDING, it was a nice red color!

FYI: In Herndon Virginia for the next few weeks!

I just replaced one this weekend that I marked 4 years ago when I got the car. The line had not moved but the cracks in the rubber made me decide to replace it anyway.

I carry a small Craftsman bag of tools and a few spares in the trunk just in case.
