Auxiliary Fuel tank idea... 200

Hi all,
I was reading through the FAQ's tonight and an idea popped into my head..

Has anyone ever fabricated an auxiliary/reserve tank for the 245's in the passenger side rear wheel well?

I imagine that it would not be too difficult to mount a tank like object in there, and since it is right above the fill tube for the real tank, one could also incorporate some kind of brass line with an on/off valve. Same idea as the reserve tanks you see on some old motorcycles... Give it it's own fill cap and cover it with the little floorboard cover, and your good to go for the long haul.
An extra (but immeasurable) benefit is that the weight of the spare (in the drivers side wheel well) would be balanced by the extra fuel.

Just my odd brain thinking up wierd ideas in the middle of the night! Has this ever been done (maybe in a rally setting?)
Maybe I'll put this on the 'several years down' to do list...
:)
Happy motoring!
Koos

Jorrell is absolutely correct. You don't want fuel *inside* the vehicle. The rear seat back in a sedan does not constitute a barrier to liquid fuel should your tank rupture for any reason inside the trunk.

Fuel tanks need to be mounted outside the "shell" of the passenger compartment!

you've got a 300+ mile cruise range already.. isn't that enough?

I'd say, from a safety standpoint, it's not a good idea.

That said, how about just storing a gas can in there? Like Volvo offered in the old 140 days...

      Kind of...
I'm a long distance runner, and by nature I like long duration activities- including drives...and Volvo's in general like the long drives better too- call it a matched driver and car- not very fast but we can go forever...:)

But you're right not safe- no go.

Personally, your idea sounds like suicide if you get hit in the RR corner by an inattentive driver! The automotive industry, for some strange reason "like safety", refuses to put a fuel cell in a primary crumple zone!

Your thought is a bad idea unless you are into pyromania! Just don't do it as gasoline fires in a car are "all consuming!"

Gotcha- makes sense. Now I know why it hasn't been done. It was merely a passing idea.

I do like that pic of the extra gas tank from the 140's though.
      Cheers,
