Mobil 1 5W-30 or 0W-40 for Northern Minnesota

My daughter has a B230 in her 1991 740 (1993 Type L engine) and lives in Northern MN. I have been putting Mobil 1 0W-40 in her car for the last 4 years but the price of 5W-30 in 5 quart containers is much cheaper. My number 1 priority is helping her get the old car started on those very cold Winter mornings, so which would be better for starting (thinner), 0W-40 or 5W-30?

Thanks

Playing favorites? Dtr2 only gets a 740???? LOL

It won't make much difference with the 2 oils. It should start easily with 5W30 and a good battery.

You might want to keep the auto tranny fluid fresh, that will also rob a lot of power as the pumps start with the engine.

BTW, have her get into the habit of turning off the headlights at shut down. Having them come one, even briefly, at start up is a not needed drain.

If she parks the cars outside, buy her a couple of block heaters for Christmas :)

Proud owner of a 220S. If I had more room, I would have more Volvos.
