b230fd boost 200 1993

I just picked up my 93 with a newly installed b230 fd. I had always planned to do this myself, but the original engine was done, and with 2 young kids and a house that needs a lot of work I just did not have the time. I was just going to get another b230 put in, but the shop had this b230fd with only about 30000 miles on it.

So now its in the car and it is working fairly well. I am wondering how much it should boost. I have the 240 turbo boost gauge from my dead 240 turbo and the boost on this new engine cuts off about halfway into the yellow range. Thats roughly 7 to 8 psi. Is that normal? My old b21ft cut off just at the red zone, around 11 psi.

It is using the original computer with the yellow injectors so I may have fuel delivery issues at high boost but it does not feel like I am running out of fuel. It feels like the wastgate opening.

Its going to be a nice engine. Much easier than the old b21ft. It has a water cooled oil cooler so you don't need the hoses and the extra rad to cool the oil. I puts the oil filter in a much easier spot to get at as well.

Hey Jessie .... My 90 Bertone has a boost gauge .... stock boost is where ypou are at about 7 psi .... mine is a TURBO+ and when you stomp it it goes to 10 psi.

Hi Bret. Thanks for the info. Whats turbo+? I am only familiar with the 240 turbos. The ones without an intercooler were about 7 psi, and the intercooled ones peaked at about 11. Since the 940s were intercooled I figured they would boost to 11 as well.

I'm not too far from you. I'm near Peggys Cove

I knew you were in NS... but had thought you were in Metro. Basically TURBO+ is an electronic Boost Controller that gives you about a 10 to 20 hp boot in the pants when you pull out to pass ... My car is rated at 187 hp... rather than 160 hp. Extra boost only kicks in at Wide Open Throttle.

Would like to meet you sometime .... ECVVC get togethers have pretty well terminated until Spring so not really a chance for you to get to meet the "Usual Suspects".

I didn't even know there was a ECVVC in NS. When do you meet?

So turbo+ just changes the waste gate control. I have a Saab APC waste gate contol sitting in a box somewhere. If I ever find time I might try to get that installed.

I am a little surprised Volvo would have bothered with higher flow injectors, an intercooler, and oil squirters, and then only set the boost at 7 psi. The stock fuel system on my car is having no problem feeding it at this boost level.

Not trying to be funny. Tell me what the FD is: I'm trying to get up on a turbo in my 87 and going for a B230FT.

I don't know what fd is either. That's why I am asking about it. I am just going by what's on the timing belt cover. I am guessing it is out of one of the last 940 turbos.

Huhh? A B230FD was never a turbo -that was the B230FT. If a B230FD has a turbo on it then it's been modified. It's more likely you have a B230FT and a shop put a B230FD timing cover on it when the original got damaged.

FYI The B230FD is a slightly revised version of the venerable NA B230F. It was used in 1993-1995 940's. The B230FD improvements included better piston lubrication with oil squirters (bye-bye piston slap) and a round toothed timing belt (supposedly improved belt life). The FD version used Bosch Jetronic LH 2.4 injection, EZ-116K ignition, EGR and Pulsair.

Check out the Wikipedea articles on red block engines. A lot of information at Wikipedia and other sites is either too specific to the North American market or too exclusive of the North American Market. Here's some more unofficial B230F information (an Australian web site). Note that the later B230FT's also received the oil squirter improvement, but didn't get a special designation (there was no B230FDT).

Thanks. Thats probably what happened. The motor came out of a written off 940, so its quite likely the original cover was damaged. I have not looked for the stamp on the engine but it is definitely a turbo.
