Fuse 5 Blowing, no turn signals. 1990 245 200

On the way home from the pick and pull the other day I noticed that I had lost my turn signals. When I got home i hit up brickboard and started turdging through the search feature and i determined that the relay was good because emergency flashers still operated inside and i had bulbs on all four corners. according to my wagons fuse box cover the signals are on fuse 5 with a 16A. the fuse was blown, i inserted a new one and it blew as i turned on the vehicle, repeat 3 times.

the switch still works for brights, don't know if this matters.

replaced switch yesterday... the signals worked for a minute then took it for a drive and fairly soon after lost them again, blows fuses as soon as key is turned to 1 or 2 position. when the volvo fuse box cover sais that on the circuit is also the tail lamp... does this mean the lights that turn on when in reverse? could a burnt out bulb be causing the fuse blowing?

I've spent some more time on the search feature and read about the turn signal being on a circuite that runs through the hazzard switch... could a wonky hazard switch be causing the #5 fuse to blow repeatedly?

the car has other electrical issues which are probably unrelated... at times the doors will automaticly lock when i open the driver side door from the inside, the driver side back door's auto lock function does not work at all. I have no brake lights, and one of my reverse lights is out. hitting the fog light switch does not do anything either, althought im not sure why, i think it has its own relay? but i do not know what it looks like. when i turn the lights on I always get a bulb out... i dont think any running light that should be working isnt working, the third brake light doesnt act as a tail light does it?

This is a repost, and for that i apologize but i keep falling flat on my face trying to fix this, any help is very much apreciated.

The Back up light Wires are known for losing their insulation and shorting to the Transmission or body.
I'm guessing that could be your issue

    Howdy,

Fuse five has two circuits on it; one wire goes to the hazard switch (eventually becoming the turn signal circuit) and one wire goes to the backup light switch. Lift one or the other blue wires off fuse 5 to determine which leg has the short to ground. My money is on the backup light switch (on the side of the shifter).

      Right on the money! 200

I disconected the blue wire that was easiest to access from the box (nearest to driver seat) and I turned the key to II and the fuse didn't blow and I had functional turn signals. EXCELLENT!

Now I have the cover off of the shifter knob, (aw70 auto, although im sure this has been assumed) and im diggin around... I can see blue wires attaching to connecters below a black plastic piece that is screwed into the right side of the shifter with a ground attatched at the first screw. Is this the reverse light switch? Any tips on fixing this?

the red and white cable that attaches to the shifter light bulb was nicked and i repaired that by cutting the connecter off below the nick and crimping on a new one.

If there was ever a plug wired in for trailor lights that would be something to suspect. Often times a shade tree mechanic will hook that stuff up without too much concern for wires chafing later, etc.
