buying a 93 940 failed emissions 900 1993

I haven't actually seen this car yet, but it looks good for the money - $1650 with 170 K. The car passed inspection but failed on emissions - apparently it passed at idle and failed everything at 2500 rpms, VIN tells me it most likely has Regina fuel injection. Owner does not want to pay mechanic to diagnose and is giving me a break on the price. Owner says mechanic figures it's a sensor - I'm thinking O2 sensor.

Would I find the sensor on the manifold or at the converter?

Are the AMMs on the Regina system tweakable the way they are on a Bosch system?

I'm a little disappointed to find it may not have the Bosch system I am so familiar with.

I'm hoping it is as good as it sounds - new exhaust front to back, new front brakes, upgraded front suspension, trailer hitch, oil sprayed every year...

I'd be wary of a mechanic who claims that failing across NOx, HC and CO at speed could be fixed by changing just the oxygen sensor. I'd factor in a few bucks for getting the car up to snuff for emissions.

Good luck!

Well I bought the car even with the failed emission test. There are definitely some irregularities though - it has a 240 motor in it with the distributor on the side not the back. I found a couple of potential vacuum leaks - the MAP sensor (where the AMM would be in a Bosch?) was not seated properly in its housing and there was a missing nut on the intake manifold. The engine has really good power and doesn't smoke on startup when cold. The were codes present including 02 sensor, I cleared them and they didn't return so I'm repeating the E test today to re-establish a baseline.

I've seen the late 940 regina cars with the distributor driven off the intermediate shaft like a 240 before-- there was one in a boneyard near here, and a mechanic I know from downtown Toronto had one too.

Good luck getting it sorted out-- I do like the late 940s-- they are very solid cars and are really straightforward to work on.

Dear Ron,

May this find You well. The Oxygen sensor fits into the catalytic convertor. Note: a Bosch oxygen sensor will not work at all in a car with Rex/Regina fuel/ignition management. The Rex/Regina-specific sensor can be had from Walker: #250-23881 universal or #250-23811 direct fit. The Volvo part is #3517394 ($160+/- at a Volvo dealer). NGK also makes this sensor.

If the Oxygen sensor is the factory-original, it doesn't owe anyone a penny.

I'm puzzled, though, by the mechanic's inability to trouble-shoot this. See the FAQs for the procedure.

I don't recall a post - in the past few years - in which "tweaking" an Air Mass Meter was reported. Even so, the sensor costs about $50 at a Volvo dealer. Only the sensor unit itself - not the housing - needs to bought, unless the housing has been damaged.

Generally, Rex/Regina systems seem quite robust.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Spook,

Thanks for your reply. I am a little surprised by the mechanics response too, but it could be the car owner was a little upset after having to spend $400 on front brakes to pass the inspection. I'm trying to think if there is any serious mechanical issue that would cause the emissions to fail when throttled but pass when idling, but I can't think of any. I'll get him to knock $200 off the price and change the O2 sensor.

The tweaking of the AMM was something I learned on this site and performed on an 87 745 to get emmisions down to almost zero - you need a multimeter hooked to the o2 sensor and you have to remove the antitamper plug from the top of the AMM and adjust with a screwdriver. Maybe this was just on LH2.2 cars.

Regina O2 Sensor $110 at Tasca 900 1993

Electrical - Powertrain control - Oxygen sensor

Ron,
Regina has no AMM, just a simple Air Temp sensor at AMM location, and an inexpensive GM type MAP sensor. Engine has the same operating specs as Bosch NA.
For an NA B230, it's every bit the equal of the Bosch IMO.

Bruce,

Thanks for the reply. Part of the reason for staying with RWD is my little parts stash that takes the worry and expense out of maintaining an older car. Last night I started our 240 wagon and discover it was having charging issues - 5 minutes later I was installing another alternator from our old 740 which fixed the problem.
