Crank pulley torque and paint 120-130 1967

With a little rope and PVC pipe for an extension, the bolt came right off so I can replace the felt seal.

Does the seal need to be oiled before inserting?

How much torque to use on the crank bolt?

As an aside, the pulley looks like it used to be painted red on the forward facing side. Should I repaint it? Will rustolium work?

Another aside, when I loosened the alternator tensioner bolt, I found that the alternator was loose. Would that have caused the noise/vibration at higher rpms? I guess I will find out soon enough :)

Thanks,

Klaus

    Painted the puley 120-130 1967

I painted the pulley a nice dark red, so it won't rust :) And in a hour or 2 I will soak the felt gasket in 3-in-1 oil and put things back together. Unless I get contrary feedback, I am going to torque the bolt to 44lbs + 60 degrees or there abouts.
I will let you know what happens. I cleaned off the bolt threads and gave it a little light oil also.

I'm with lucid on the torque.
Although I have no idea how many ft-lbs 44 + 60 degrees translates to, I'd bet it is more than the 50 -58 ft-lbs.

Good for you that the project is coming along and glad you could rescue that 220 for / from CA. Send her regards.

58 lbs, nice red pulley, and a tight alternator make for a good running car.

Except for the other problems, of course :)

Hopefully, no more oil dripping on the garage floor. Wow, the bottom of this car will never rust! I feel sorry for the cars behind me getting their windshield waterproofed...

My old Haynes and Clymer 120/130/140 manuals say 50-58 ft lbs.

FWIW, B21/23 spec is 122 ft lbs

The 44 ft lbs plus 60° is spec for B230

THANKS! I like 58lbs much better. The B230 spec was all I could find in a search.

While you have the pulley off you might want to accentuate, or at least make most visible the timing marks - white nail polish or somesuch now that it's red? And also use the opportunity to clean up the front of the timing cover so that the pointer is a crisp fixed point.

The edge of the pulley was not painted, so the timing marks are still there. Just cleaner. I didn't know there were degree marks!

Yep, cleaned off most of the cover including the timing pointer. The top portion of the cover will require steam. What a mess this engine is! But there is no rot on the undercarriage, 1/4 inch of oil does wonders in keeping the water at bay.
