my ding a ling 900 1994

we recently acquired a 94 940 turbo, and it has been very well behaved so far.
Week or so ago the interior light and the clock stopped working. The fuse was blown so I replaced it. Wife drives for a day, everybody's happy. Wife calls me at work, says the warning chime won't shut off. Any time the key is turned on it dig-ding-dings. Half an hour to work half an hour home,so I get to drive it till I fix it.
Number five Fuse hard blows as soon as both prongs engage the fuse panel.I am thinking one of the door switches has a bare wire. Does anyone else have a better idea?
Is there some way to disable the idiot bell?
Thanks as always
Paul

Circuits served by the #5 fuse:

Clock, vanity mirror light, glovebox light, trunk light, interior lighting, radio, power antenna, door-open warning lights (the red lights in the doors), CD changer, anti-theft alarm.

Perhaps this will help you with the search.

Having read the fuse panel, i was looking for
something that could have catastrophic ground issues.
However if someone knows how to disable the ding a ling thing i would be grateful to hear it.
Then I can continue the search for the ground fault.
Thanks as always
Paul

The seat belt reminder/key-in warning chime relay is a largish rectangular unit in the back row (farthest from you) of the elec. centre, beside the cylindrical bulb failure relay. Pull it and the ding-a-lings stop.

Since the fuse blows as soon as you insert it, there is a 12v wire shorted to ground somewhere. Most likely candidates could be wires that are flexed regularly when whatever they are attached to moves. This would include trunk light and the door-open warning lights in the doors, all fed 12v via Green/Red wires.

The wires to the door switches get grounded when the door is opened, so if one of them were shorted to ground, you'd have lights on all the time along with the key-in warning chime. Unless, of course, a Green/Red is also shorted, which blows the fuse, which keeps the lights off, but the chime will still go.

Sounds like a Byzantine plot, but these older Volvos can have many electrical gremlins.

Blsessings upon you and all who bear your name. The ding a ling's reign of terror is over.
You wouldn't happen to know where the ding a ling is on 240's would you?
I will persue the ground fault when the rain lets up.
thanks
paul

On our early-80's 240's the buzzer relay is a largish rectangular Blue box above the driver's legs behind the black felt panel.

if I knew where it was, we wouldn't be having this conversation.
OTOH I would like to know why the #5 fuse is blowing.
Thanks for the reply.
Paul
