Idle Control Motor Cleaning 200 1985

I seem to remember someone posting information about how to remove and clean the idle control motor but couldn't find it. Also is there a way to properly test it?

I would not spray carb cleaner directly into the IAC because you run the risk of damaging the motor winding insulation.
I always use a 50/50 mix of carb cleaner & WD-40 (btw WD-40 or PB Blaster by itself is a great cleaner) in a small container, apply with a Q-Tip, and dry with a Q-Tip. Use a pencil eraser to hold the valve open.

The gap of the IAC when cold should be about 40 thou or 1mm, then close when 12v applied as the motor warms up. There's a spec in the green books or Bently, Hanes manual

I got the IAC out and noticed that the little "door" inside was open about 1/4". Is this normal? Also, I sprayed the heck out of it and moved the little door back and forth a few times and reinstalled and I still have a high idol!

That gap is much too big. No wonder the idle is high.
There's a bi-metallic spring in the motor, which can be adjusted if you clear the cement off the screw, but with a gap that big the response would be off over the entire cold start operating range.
Time for a new one.

I always remove the IAC valve and am very careful not to get the spray into the motor. Hold it upside down when spraying so it all drains out and does not get into the motor. Q-tips also help when scrubbing is required.

I agree, however last time I tried to remove it to clean it I couldn't get it to budge. I removed all 3 bolts holding the bracket to the engine and tried to slide the IAC out and this thing would not come loose.

Am I missing something?

You must have missed a bolt? My 240s are newer and the IAC slips out of it's rubber mount easily.

I've always used carb cleaner in the spray can to clean it. If it's not idling correctly and with the engine not running you can remove the IAC hose that goes from your intake hose down to the IAC and spray carb cleaner in there for 10 to 15 seconds. After reinstalling the hose then start the engine. It will probably act like it's going to start and immediately temporarily go into a hard start condition. This is normal. It's trying to clear the carb cleaner that you just sprayed in there but it will start. If this doesn't fix your problem, you can remove the IAC from the car and spray it out liberally and shake it to be sure that the thing inside rotates freely. Once you get it out you'll see what I mean. Also, there's a resistance test for the IAC in the Bentley manual if you have one of those. If not go to www.k-jet.org-files-greenbooks and they have it there also. Good Luck!
