93 240 Power Side Mirrors move sporadically - toggle switch or mirror motor problem? 200 1993

Hey all,

I just bought a 1993 240 (wagon) and realized that the powered side mirrors can only be adjusted sporadically, or not at all.

It's tough to get them to move using the toggle switches down next to the parking brake, and when they do, they seem to only move inward and downward, so you end up seeing only the side of the car and the ground.

The previous owner said that she hadn't adjusted the mirrors (or very, very rarely) in almost ten years (she was the only driver).

Do I need to lubricate something? Or replace the toggle switches?

It's driving me loony.

-Mike

Spraying my switches with Radio Shack electronics cleaner made the switches work better.

Thanks! I used the CRC version of electronic cleaner at Wal-Mart, and now they work perfectly. Just sprayed it on, waited 10 minutes to make sure it was dry, turned on the key, and presto. Nice, easy fix. Thanks for the tip.

Probably the switches.

There are 2 reversable motors in each mirror. Motors are controlled by switch modules. One motor tilts mirror up and down and the other motor tilts left and right. From your description both motors in both mirrors move in both directions but cannot come into alignment. If correct then that proves the switches and motors are OK.

Problem may be that the mirrors need to be "indexed" or centered to their home postions, then they can be move by the motors to where you want them. I am not sure how to index the mirrors but only want to save a lot a work chasing down "bad" switches that are really OK.

David,
Thanks for the insight. Actually both the left and right mirrors would both move in only 2 directions, down and in. Regardless, it looks like there was a bad connection in the up and out contacts on the switches - one spray with CRC electronics cleaner got the switches working perfectly.

However, I ended up manually pushing the mirrors around when they wouldn't work with the switches. I hope I didn't push them off their proper index.
