I read in one of my Volvo books that when the 444/544 were being manufactored that there was some kind of rear seat conversion to a sleeping area option that could be ordered from the factory. Has anyone ever heard of this or seen one of these options in a car. I was just wondering what it would look like.

You guys are so lucky to have the 444/544's. As they never came in RHD few have come to Australia, usually by personal import only.

Someone suggested recently that with all the retro models being produced - Mini, Fiat 500, PT Cruiser - if Volvo was ever game enough to produce a 444/544 lookalike I am sure there would be many takers judging by the way you guys love these cars!

In the meantime I will just have to live with my 1970 142S.

Here's what the brackets for the rear seat bed look like. I don't know if there is any other hardware required for the conversion.

I still have the original seat conversion brackets in my '60. I'll take some photos and post them today or tomorrow.

The answer is yes. My last 64 that I sold had an original drivers handbook. It did show a picture of the support brackets. It showed that the pivot pins for the front seat backs had a pin with a small leather strap with some type of snap(?) on the end. It appeared that the pin could easily be removed without tools. The rear seat back was laid flat on the supports in front of the rear seat cushion, and the front seat backs were placed vertically in place of the rear seat cushion. There were several other pictures of optional item, like the trans tunnel wire basket, a reverse back-up light, and others.

Hi, I have this equipment for my 544, and I have also tried to sleep in a previous 544 that I owned while I was a student. It actually works quite fine, even with a girlfriend on board ;-). The hardware needed is the two metal profiles as shown in a previous post plus the special snap on bolts for the back of the front seats. I purchased such a kit a few years ago from CVI automotive in Sweden (excellent webshop), part no 79772 at selling price SEK 481 (approx USD 70) however it seems that stock is depleted. Swedish name is Bäddsats, and maybe there are other sources on the internet.

Hi, Sorry for late reply and again sorry for being unable to do so, as I am about 6.000 kms at least separated from my car for the next few months. However, they are made of some kind of brass with a leather strap fixed to one end, and a pushbutton attacted to the other which snaps on the other when in position. This avoids the use of tools in order to take off front seat backs.

those sound like the stock attachments (or at least what's been on my PV as long as I can remember). Maybe these came with the kit.

Skeet! You have hit my hot button. The mythical "Back Up Light"

Is there/was there a part number for such on a 544? I know that there is a switch on the back of the transmission that is activated by one of the rods that engage when the shift lever is put in reverse, however, I have never seen an actual example of a "stock" light.

There is an extra hole in my rear bumper, but I believe it is for mounting a red reflector.

Would be very interested in finding out about this set up - and then putting one into use!

These come up, both the round one and the rectangular one, on Tradera.com in Sweden. I was even able to get an NOS version of each, one for my 1956 and one for my 62. Here is the round one shown in a 1955 accessories catalog, and mine mounted on my 444. The part numbers are #79027 (round) and #79503 (rectangular)

There is a reproduction part available with red or clear lens. The red being a rear fog. Check with Christer at www.vp-autoparts.com in Charleston SC. That is where I bought mine.

I have that very round back up light on my 444 - came with the car. But I've always thought it was from some other car, because it has "FORD" stamped in the body of the lamp, just behind the ring that retains the lens. There's an identical light on an early 50s Packard that parks near my office, but this one's stamped "PACKARD." I initially thought mine was a dealer installed or aftermarket Intended-for-a-Ford piece, then thought they must be generic aftermarket when I saw the one labeled Packard... and after seeing the pic linked on your message, I'm more curious/confused than ever.

The light looks exactly like the depiction - same curved mounting base, etc.

Maybe, for the last 13 years, I've thought I had something that wasn't all that correct (but functional and appropriately vintage)... and it's actually closer to the real deal than I'd initially thought?

I used the "bed kit" in my 63 544 in 1965 at Road America CanAm races, my wife and I couldn't find a hotel so we found a camp ground, it was very uncofortable, the seats don't match up very good, I had my head under the dash.But we were young and didn't care. Dick
