89 Volvo 240 Defroster. 200

This is my first year at owning a 89 volvo 240. I live in michigan and in the morning I go to use my defroster and it seems like it makes the rest of my windows fog up worst then when they were.It almost acts like a humidifer. But I have no evidence of any leaks any where. It takes about a 15 min ride to defog the driver side windshield, about 1/2 hour ride to defog the passenger side windshield, and the rest of the windows never get defogged by the time I make it to work, (about 1/2 hr ride). My autometer brand, water temp gauge reads 195 degrees faren. I have awsume heat coming out of both defroster ducts, so hot I can barly hold my hand on it. I have the defroster button pushed in the floor heater button not pushed in, the heater control on max,air conditioner off (it doesnt work any way), and the fan motor on 4, and the dash vents below the radio shut off, and the side vents pointed toward the side door windows. Both front defroster vents left and right blow equally as hard, and it gets so hot in the car you have to open the window.what ever combination I try, I just cant get the windows defogged till I am almost to work and looking through an area on my windshield about 10" around, not safe. Do these cars just not defog well? or could I be doing something wrong? I can tell you this car has no problem keeping you warm inside. Any suggestions would surly be appreciated!

AC, coincident with your signon initials - the AC has to work before the windows will defog. If you crack the windows slightly on your ride to work the air moving in the cabin will help not fog you up worse. Cold morning breath towards the windshield will fog that thing up. Keep some air circulating.

You should lift up the carpets front and rear to check for water or antifreeze, it sounds like you have excess moisture in the cabin area. Also, turning on the heater will make the window fogging worse, the defrost setting ia intended to be used with the AC turned on. The AC actually removes moisture from the air by condensing it into liquid water... that then drains through a drain tube in the floor.

Jorrell, I took my whole car apart and did find that the heater core was leaking. It will probably take me a week to put it back together. Thanks for your input it was helpful. But I still did not get one question answered, do these cars defog and defrost good/bad/average?

Defrosts the windows like a car from Sweden should but it will fog up inside as you roll along. A 240 with a properly working heater and rear defroster can clean the frost off the windows about as fast and any car I have seen.

If the AC compressor works the inside of the car does not fog up either. If the AC does not work well or at all, carry a towel, crack a window, and press the button to let in fresh air. How else will the leaves get in the car? Helps if you practice Wax on, Wax off with the towel. Without AC you will be doing that quite a bit.

        Regards,

        Paul
