I am going to tow a small (4x8) uhaul trailer with my 93 940 turbo wagon, with about 300lbs of load inside it for about 200 miles. Do I need to install a transmission cooler? I know that I should shut off the OD, but are there any other precautions I should take?

Consider changing your transmission fluid to synthetic: Mobil 1 ATF works exceptionally well, is resistant to heat and breakdown, and will be far better than a cooler. See the FAQ for flushing instructions.

Your car has a transmission cooler that is more than sufficient for that load. OD should be acceptable on the flats.

Do you already have a hitch and trailer wiring? If not, make sure they do the wiring right...UHaul can't reasonably screw up the hitch but they can fry your bulb-out relay.

Only other thing to remember is common sense. Double your expected stopping distances and make sure the trailer is loaded such that the tongue weight is not excessive.

Like Onkel Ud, I would not feel the need for a trans cooler for that small load and short distance either, and I also would use the overdrive, but I would not lug it or burry my foot on the throttle.

Besides the caution of not too much tongue, make sure you get some. If you think too much is scary, try none sometime.
