Speedometer Question 200 1986

Just bought a new speedometer, k9800 for my stationwagon.New Speedometer currently reads 217452. My old speedo that is burnt up reads 248743. I want to make the new one read the same as my old one to keep the mileage up to date. How do i increase mileage on the odometer to read my volvo's true mileage? Thanks

Speedometer Question 200 1986

I did this on my '88, but it wasn't that easy. You know those little gears across the top of the numbers? There is a pin going through them attached to a worm gear. If you pull the pin out from the worm gear side so the other end is free, you can lift the gears up off the number wheels so they can turn freely. I was having trouble getting the numbers straight, some of them were getting stuck halfway, so you have to be careful. Also, there are little springs around there - you don't want to lose any of them!

Speedometer Question 200 1986

What I tried to do with my 122 involved using a square-bit chucked in a drill. Put the bit into the cable speedo receiver and ran the drill for a while. It spun at about 60 mph. It would have take quite some time to spin up to the correct mileage, and I gave up eventually. 122s only had 5 digit odometers anyway so it is much less of an issue on that world.

However...
I think the 86 has an electronic receiver, so you'd have to rig something up with the sensor... No idea what to try for that...

I know of one way to do it......... 200 1986

Do you have access to a waveform or signal generator and a 12 Volt DC power supply? Doing by hand would take forever.

If yes, I can patch you something together using a page from Art's website on speedometer repair as a guide. That will run the speedo forward, it will take a bit to do but it can be done.

I think that wanting to roll the OD forward is a Volvo owner thing........

Yeah I thought about it on Inga, hers is about 20K behind.

Regards,

Paul

Rolling the speedo forward is definitely a Volvo thing.Anyone not on this board would think you're nuts! You want your car to have more miles,go figure.
