Stock Radio amp. when did Volvo start using the amp. 200

Hello,

Quiz time: 1990 240
What year did Volvo begin using that amp. for the radio?

I have the chance to buy a stock am/fm/cassette, but it has
the amp. plug and I am not sure my 90 used the amp. If so I
hope it is still under the console on my 1990. I know the
1991 uses the amp.

Thanks for you information.

I hear you about the damage to the car from car stereo thieves...you would think they would have the same little tools I have to pull one without damage (to the head unit or the dash) as they are pretty universal. I have had three <$100 stereos stolen from various Volvo's over the years.

A buddy of mine installed a neat little unit that does not even have a "head" but a wired remote he keeps in the center console. All the AV stuff is actually under the passengers seat...no idea who makes it.

Am I right in assuming that the car now has an aftermarket unit that bypasses the amp, if it was ever there?

You can try pulling out the unit, see if the amp plug is still there tucked into the underdash area. If not, either it never had it, or whoever installed the aftermarket radio removed it.

90 appears to have been a changeover year, where some cars were shipped with and some without. The 1990 Mitchell chart shows a four speaker setup with no amp. The 91 chart shows the separate amp.

The stereo was stolen during the last owners ownership years.
I hope the 1990 has the plug, do I need to have the amp. since the
new radio has the amp. hole for the plug? Or can I bypass the
      amp. somehow.

      Thanks,
      Joseph

If the radio you're considering has the hole for the amp plug, you need the amp to make it work - no bypassing. What's the model number of the radio you're looking at?

          Radio Model TD-613 200

          It is a TD-613.

I have an extra amp. in the garage that I pulled when I bought
a radio at the P&P for my 91 240, but luckily the 91 had the
amp. still in it, so I saved that amp.

But, I hope that the 90 still has the amp. behind the glove box
and the wiring still intact. Since I hear tell that the amps. on
the 90 and 91 were not the same.

Or maybe the TD-613 will only work on the amp. I have in the
garage. It is always a suprise working on the cars. Sometimes
the suprise is good and sometimes not.

Thanks for any and all the information.

            Radio Model TD-613 200

Last night I took a look at the TD-613 in my '92 parts car. Here's what I found.

            - It has a 10 or 12 pin connector out the back of it.
            - The harness connected to it did not have speaker wires.
            - Instead there is a "jumper" harness that includes the amp connector.
            - The jumper harness connects to the car's regular radio connector that includes wiring for two speakers.
            - The other end connects at the amp, feeding four channels of speaker wires back up to the car's connector (two channels) and to another separate connector (back two channels).
            - The amp has four channels and is located behind the lower cubby in the console.

Since the TD-613 uses all pins of the connector I will say that at best the it has a two channel internal amp. However maybe those pins aren't connected to anything inside. Also, the unit doesn't have much for cooling vents which leads me to believe it doesn't have a heat-producing amp.

I've already offered the radio to Repairman but I suspect a working tape deck is important to him, so he won't want this one. Once this is confirmed I will extend the offer to you if you need the amp, wire harness or radio.

              Will,
I now have all the necessary parts.
I need the code for the TD-613, where
              can I find the code?

              Thanks,
              Joseph

I found the code written (by the PO) in the owners manual. I was able to get the radio code for my 850's SC-811 by taking my registration to the local Volvo dealer who was able to look it up. The parts counter needed a VIN # and proof of ownership. For an "old" 240 radio I doubt they would care much about proof of ownership - not much market for stolen factory cassette decks. You should NOT have to pay for this service.

Not sure if they can decipher the code without a VIN, but it's worth a shot.

Also, search the BB and the internet. I'm sure this question has come up before.

My '90 has one behind the glove box. They're not really all that great, frankly. I put in a cheapo CD/MP3 unit and simply bypassed the amp.

Both my 91's had the external amp. I reinstalled the old radio as a decoy in my daughters car after some crack head stole her 3 year old $100 head unit.

I would rather have a nice new modern CD player, they have a more powerful 4 channel amp internal to the head unit . The old cassette radios weren't all that good in the first place and are now almost 20 years old.

Our 90 244 had the amp installed on the firewall just behind the glovebox. Our 92 245 had a different Volvo amplifier that was installed behind the storage "cubby hole" at the bottom of the center console. Those two are not interchangeable.

Our 89 did not have have an amplifier and did not have rear door speakers. The 90 and 92 had rear door speakers.

The '89 didn't have it. I THINK '90 was the year.

        Thanks, for the good news.
I hope my amp. and wire/plug is still there because
the stock radio I am looking to buy has the amp. hole.

I like the original radios (it keeps my window non-broken
by some cd player thief), I just use a cassette adaptor
        that plays my mp3.

Thank you all for the information.

Yeah, I do that too (cassette adapter) w/old stock unit and iPod. Except the cassette motor makes this "nyangh nyangh nyangh" sound so I guess at some point that'll die.

My '91 240 has the amp behind the lower "storage" cubby. I wrote it as "storage" because there's a 1/2" wide vertical opening on each side of it through which small items vanish. Weird...

Anyway, I was told that the '91 has the speakers wired to the amp, not the head unit, which makes replacing the head unit kind of a pain in the ass. Anyone done this?

Not the same as 240's but maybe this will apply:

I got a JVC head unit with iPod control for the '89 740 from Crutchfield and they supplied an adapter harness which bypasses the Volvo external amp and connects the JVC to the speakers. Another adapter harness mates the JVC wiring to the power, Accessory, lighting, etc. Minimal cutting and splicing, works great. Their people are pretty knowledgeable and can tell you over the phone if they have those harnesses for your 240.

Agreed on using Crutchfield for upgrades. I've done three, two in 740s with the amp, and one in a 24, no separate amp, but upgrading from two to four speakers. The harnesses and decent instructions came at no additional cost.
