Oil Filler Cap 444-544

I have been all over the net, and all over the forum and couldn't find an answer to my question, which probably means it's a stupid question. But I have no shame so I'll ask. I have a B18 engine with a "snorkle" type oil filler cap. I'm assuming has something to do with ventilation. There are three screws on the cap. I read that there is some sort of "pot scrubber" material inside the cap. My question is: does the cap ever need to be opened up and cleaned?
Sorry if I wasted your time, your welcome if it made you laugh.

In theory, on the B18, if the snorkel is piped up to the front air filter as per Volvo, the air flow should be into the engine. i.e. clean air from the air filter is sucked into the engine via the snorkel. This assumes that the other pipe is also as Volvo intended. Should mean that the wire wool keeps clean. The B20 system reverses the flow in the cap and routes engine fumes to the inlet manifold. Means that the B20 cap can get a bit clogged up. After removing the screws, the cover can be tapped off with a small mallet but there's not much to hold on to.
Regardless of how it's piped up, a clean now and then keeps the flow going. Read the other day to beware of using the similar B21/23 cap as it isn't vented at all. Don't let the nice chrome tempt you.........

Thanks for the info. I didn't try using a mallet but I will. I did try using "Gunk" and an airhose but with something considerably less than stellar results.

Hello,

You do not need to disassemble the breather cap to install the brass wool.

I prefer to soak the breather cap in carb cleaner before installing new brass wool, but it is not mandatory.

Hi Eric,
Does your way involve long nose pliers?

I'm making a list of stuff I'll be needing. Can you give me your email address and I'll send it when it's complete?

I was wondering this too. I have the same kind on my 122. And I noticed the Brillo looking thing inside, but could never separate it even after unscrewing the 3 screws. Just ended up soaking it in warm water. Clean now!!

I too can't recall ever seeing any recommendations on cleaning out the cap filter, but have always believed it should be done occasionally. If you remove the 3 screws you can separate the cap and take out the wire mesh filter.
Just wash it out in degreaser, oil lightly and reassemble.

The cover comes off but the can doesn't open.
Best way to clean is just to slosh solvent in it and dump the solvent.

You should not have to oil it, it'll get oily by itself!
Its purpose is to trap oil.

Oil Filler Cap 444-544

Hi George,
Now I'm really confused. One of the responders said that fresh air was drawn from the air cleaner into the engine suggesing that oil wouldn't get to the cap. My system seems to work like this: crankcase fumes are sent to the air intake pipe located in the midle of the the intake manifold tube. Fresh clean air is then sent into the engine via the hose from the carb attachmnet to the oil cap. But that doesn't make sense either. It would seem to me that any "blow by" past the valve seals would go from the valve cover through the "snorkle" hose in the oil cap, through the hose and INTO the carb, via the attachment device.

In theory it comes in through the aircleaner, through the valve cover, into the crankcase, through the
breather box on the side of the engine and into the manifold.
In practice you almost always get some backflow and that is why the brillo in the cap,
to catch most of it. On most cars with the adapter between the filter and the carb the adapter is slimy.
On the others the air filter is slimy in front of the hose connnection.

Jan;

The PCV system is often the source of confusion...maybe this will help: http://www.sw-em.com/pcv_diagrams.htm

Ron,
That completely clears it up, the diagram was especially helpful, but I have two more questions: How can you tell if the PCV is working properly and Is there anything inside of the adapter between the filter (Brillo, sponge etc)or is it just hollow?.
