M47 on the way out? 200

In the past few weeks I've noticed it's increasingly harder to put the car in first gear... almost a gummy, plastic feeling. Second gear is vaguely mimicking the effect. Conversly 5th is exhibiting some similar sypmtoms. Best I can describe is that it feels like a bushing is not allowing me to precisely put it into gear at lateral extemes. The shift rod bushings are about 3 years old and previously I have removed the bolts holding the shifter boot (to monitor the crappy URO Flex Disc) and the bushings have no play... I'm dreading a synchro issue...

On an ancillary note, Reverse has to be grinded to get into gear... This was a normal occurance, but it, too, has gotten worse... and loud.

All of this is exacerbated when the car is hot.

Thanks to all

P.S. I will performing the "To adjust reverse gear detent" as described in the Bentley (p.430-3) this weekend to see if this has any effect.

What gear lube are you using? How old is it? Redline MTL will cure that reluctant first gear and reverse, given everything else is up to spec.

Just a thought here on the fringe. If I recall correctly the M47 doesn't have a synchro on the reverse gear. Based on that, I would suspect that the clutch may not be fully disengaging.

At a minimum I would adjust the clutch cable and see if that helps before calling the trans dead. And for part of the problem you are correct to adjust the Reverse lockout gate!

hmmm, worse when hot, also a symptom of a stretched clutch cable as it gets longer when hot.

Though I don't have any M47, I have to chime in and say those symptoms sound exactly like a swollen, oil-soaked clutch or stretchy cable. But keep driving it that way, and I'd guess the synchros will become a problem too.

A bargain is something you don't need at a price you can't resist.

Thats what I was thinking, the clutch cable. My M46 cable does all sorts of weird things when the weather changes. Adjusting is easy. I'd also have a spare just in case if its starting to get old. Those things are designed to break on you at that plastic piece that takes all the stress of holding the cable in place.
