I have a 1991 740 wagon w/b230f 2.3 liter engine that hit or miss on starting, and when it does it won't run but for a few minutes then cuts off. I have replaced the fuel pressure regulator, Idle Air control valve, fuel filter, and air mass meter. When it DOES run and you put it in gear and give it gas, it dies. When its in park you can give it gas & it will run for a few seconds more then die. It has newer fuel pump as well....any ideas? I am frustrated and I need a a vehicle to drive asap!

You will need to familiarize yourself with the sections on stalling etc in the FAQ's. What you are describing now could be any number of items ranging from the Fuel Pump relay(common and cheap) to the Crank Position sensor to plain old tune up items(plugs wires cap rotor). But read the FAQ's!! They will sort of walk thru the sequence of what to check. Have you pulled codes? You dont need a scanner, see FAQ section on OBD codes. Good starting point.

Check the S Shaped hose CAREFULLY ! VERY CAREFULLY, they have a tendency to rot and the tears in the hoses are VERY Difficult to find,

Pull (not literally) off the S Hose and inspect it for holes or a leak. You may have to bend the hose around to find the tear/leak/hole..I bet you have one.

Are you blowing Black Smoke when you step on the gas ? If you are VACUUM LEAKS make the car run very rich and blow black smoke out the tailpipe - especially with the B230FTs. Spoken from direct experience.
