Re-wiring door speakers 200 1988

I've got a 1988 244 with a stereo in the upper dash and front-door speakers only. The left speaker wasn't working when I bought the car, and I assumed it was simply a busted speaker, since they were the original, 1988 speakers. After the installation, the stereo and right speaker were working, but the left still failed to function properly.

My guess is that there's some faulty wiring between the receiver and the left speaker, and it needs to be re-done. In theory everything is stock, except for the changes which I made. Has anyone done this before? Are there any suggestions, instruction manuals, or diagrams that I can consult?

Thanks so much.

There's a fair chance the radio itself is bad. Many of us has had the radio do this. One side dies. Give the wiring a look first of course.

Re-wiring door speakers 200 1988

Hey Wyatt,

My guess is the wiring is bad at the speaker, or its possibly blown. I would check the wiring at the speaker to see if was broken or disconnected. There is a chance the wiring is broken at the door hinge, but that is less likely.

Heres a wiring diagram. It covers everything, including the radio circuits (page 12).

The diagram is from Mitchell and its in English. I highly recommend saving to your computer for future reference.

Thanks so much for the post! I'm quite certain it's not the speaker, since it's brand new and works on the other door. I'm also sure it's not the wiring, at the speaker itself, because I replaced that along with the new speakers.

I'll check out the diagram, and update if there's any progress.

You're welcome! 200 1988

Hey Wyatt,

You're welcome! I hope it helps. I didn't realize the speaker was new... So that rules the speaker out. Could be a bad or open connection somewhere else. Worse comes to worse, you could run a new wire if you have to.

Good luck!

Nice Tip Olaf! 200 1988

That is a most excellent link Olaf!

Typed in 86 instead of 88 and the diagram popped up (all 20 pages) and now I have the wiring for that rear wiper motor. That will get saved on the iMac tonight!

Thanks for the post and Regards,

Paul

Thanks! 200 1988

Hey Paul,

Glad the link was helpful to you as well! Hope you can get that wiper motor figured out. If you are interested in more info, check out the page where I found these links... If you haven't found it already.

At the bottom of the page, there are scans of factory green books. The one toward the bottom is for electrical systems. Its like 35 MB in pdf format, but I'm sure it could be really handy. Here's a direct link to it:

Its in English like the other stuff. A couple of other things are in Polish. I have to give it to these folks for having a great site.

Cheers, Jon 'Uncle Olaf'

Before you start tearing into thr wiring, a simple check would be to swap the speaker from left to right and see if the problem follows. If it does then it's a bad speaker. If it doesn't then there's probably a wiring issue. Good Luck
