Fuel pump stays on after car is shut off

greetings everyone. I just picked up an 89 740 wagon, non turbo automatic. the stock radio did not work so i put in a cheap sony cd player and somehow through this process (weather its related to the stereo install i dont know) the fuel pump stays on after i shut the car off... the first few times i reached under the car and unplugged a wire going to the car (it is the fuel pump under the drivers seat) but on another occasion i did not unplug it and when i came back later it was off.... i was thinking perhaps volvos have some sort of accumulator or something, but i doubt it, as i did not ever notice it before (granted i had only had the car a couple of days before all of this) does anyone on here that knows more about volvos have any idea???
thanks
Bill

Last time I had that one the fuel pump relay had water dripping out of it.

And yeah had to find and fix the leak also. I hate it when that happens.

    Regards,

    Paul

Yup, never let the relays hang upside down. I thought the same thing, but remembered the 700 series has the relay plugged into a panel.

I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out,I lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.

    Hi Bill,

Welcome to the Brickboard. I will fill in model and year, but when you post you should do it, so the thread shows up in the right forum. With the defaults, ALL and ALL, only a few of us read them.

The fuel pump in an 89 740 should only run when the motor is turning, or for about 1 second when you first turn the key on. This is for safety.

But there is a frequent problem with the engine control unit (ECU) computer resulting in a failure to activate the fuel pump, and because the computer is expensive, some, uh, well-wisher may have bypassed the safety function, allowing the pump to run at all times.

Or it could be more innocent, such as welded contacts on the fuel injection relay, located in the fuse panel by the ashtray, I think. I am a fan of the 240 models, so I will leave the details on how to find that to the 740 folks on the board.

No need for forgiveness. Just trying to get you inundated with suggestions from the right folks - those who know about 7-series. Looks like you're off to a good start.

    Check the fuel pump relay

    Hey Bill,

I would check the fuel pump relay. Its in a tray with other relays and the fusebox behind the ashtray.

This will show you where it is:

    http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/ElectricalCircuitsRelays.htm#RelayLocations

I would try pulling the relay out with the car off, whilst the pump is running. If you hear a 'click', then something else could be feeding the relay's coil. Another likely possibility is the contacts welded together, causing the relay to stick closed.

You may want to repost this in the 700 series section of the RWD forum. You'd likely get more replies.

    Regards, Jon 'Uncle Olaf'
