    Electric cooling fan 900 1994

I have a 94 940NA. The fan seems to come on regularly about 10 seconds after start up. I have recently changed the water pump and Thermostat, and I have only since then taken notice of the fan. I live near DC so it isn't cool yet but not really hot either.

I'm wondering now if it should'nt be coming so quickly

Air conditioning pressure switches can turn the fan on. Is your A/C switched off? The A/C system has an in-built delay of about 8-10 seconds after the engine starts before the compressor clutch engages. This sounds like it correlates to your fan turn on. If the fan runs as soon as the A/C compressor starts, there is most likely a bad pressure switch or maybe your system is greatly overfilled with refrigerant.

If you have the Bosch engine management system, the engine computer (ECU) will trigger the fan if it detects high coolant temperature. Hard to see how this can happen right after startup unless the computer or the temperature sensor is bad.

If you have the Regina system the fan is triggered by an on-off temperature switch (which I believe is screwed into the rad).

    Dear carlsberg1664,

May this find you well. The fan's purpose is to help the engine get rid of heat.Generally, electric cooling fans come on, when:
    (a) the ambient temperature is high (e.g., above 85°F ⎪°C])
    (b) the car is moving slowly, or not at all (e.g., stuck in traffic) and/or
    (c) the air conditioning is on and/or
    (d) a trailer or boat is being towed and/or
    (e) during steep ascents.

If you live in a "low stress" area - where ambient temperatures are rarely above 75 degrees, traffic jams are rare, the terrain is flat, and you do not tow anything - the electric fan's help may never be needed.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

Thank you Spook. I appreciate your reply. The only one that applies to me is (b).The car has been in slow and no moving traffic, but the fan did not come on.The temperature gauge stayed at 1/2 though.

        Dear Carlsberg1664,

May this find you well. You're welcome! If - when you were stuck in traffic - the ambient temperature was, say, 50°F or lower, there would have been no need for the fan to come-on.

        Hope this helps.

        Yours faithfully,

        Spook
