This is cool (pun intended).
Just last week I noticed my '86 745 has the louvers in the drivers kick panel. Thought that was kind of weird because I never saw anything like a floor vent in a 700 series. Maybe they have them in non-US models that didn't come with A/C, who knows.
Will have to take a closer look as this would be something I'd like in the car.

My 1990 has the louvers as well. If I understand correctly, there's no cutout behind the panel, but I did not pull the panel to check...

Does anybody have one of these for sale? I would like to buy one for my 89.

Charles--I have a few vent assemblies saved from 140 and 240's. I am on the road and using my daughter's computer so if you are interested please write to me at the address in my member profile. -- Dave

Joe, I do have vent assemblies. I checked my profile--the e-mail address is there. I've sent a note to your address. What part of NJ are you in? I'll be heading back to Long Island from NC on Tuesday--probably taking the I-81 to I-78 route. I have vents available here (installed a passenger side vent years ago in my carbureted V8 265-now off the road) in NC - the V8 is going into a later body along with a 5-speed gearbox. -- Dave

The '89 doesn't have the Grill work in the kick panel. I guess I need to look for an '88 or earlier blue Kick panel.
I hate AC, never use it so air coming in low would be nice.
I wonder if I have the Galvanized cover under my Kick

Thanks a bunch for this!
I had one of these in my old '85 240. Miss it in our later ones.
Always nice to have a few disassembly photos of one of the few areas of the 240 that I'm not familiar with disassembling!

Great post w/pics.
Does anyone know what year the vent was eliminated?
Was that galvanized plate in place of the vent used only in the first year of non vent production and then just eliminated in the stamping in following years or is the filler plate in all 24x up to '93?
Thanks
I too miss the vent that I had in an '85 245! I would rather use that vent than AC on a warm day or eve.

I seem to recall reading in some Volvo service literature somewhere that it was not available on cars with air conditioning. In that case, it certainly wouldn't be on any car from 86-up (US market, anyway.) But my father's old 82 242 had one and it had a/c so I don't know.
I installed one of these things in the 88 and it was great, too bad its not possible to put one in my 93 (I don't think anyway). The changes in the dash for SRS seem to screw this up. The kick panel has half of a grille cutout for it but I don't think it has the blank panel in the body. I'll have to check it out next time I have it apart.

Your photos are terrific. I have a 1988 245 and based on my previous 1979 245 that had vents on BOTH sides, I did what you did to my current wagon a while back. Can't add the vent to the passenger side on later models with electronic fuel injection because the computer is in the passenger side footwell over what was the vent opening.
My only complaint with the driver's side vent is the handle nests in a recess [seen clearly in one your your pics] below the vent in such a way as to make it difficult to locate by feel when you are driving. I taped a piece of electrical tape on the handle and made a "flag" that sticks out, making it easier to locate by feel.

sigh...i got a vent and was all ready to install it, only to find out that my '91 doesn't even have the cutout.
so if anyone want a vent for his/her pre-90 240, contact me.

weather:
are you saying that the stamped metal cut out was eliminated (no cover plate) or that the plastic vent filler was missing? If the former then I understand that all 24x '90 on eliminated the punch out in the stamping for the vent. Correct?
Thanks
Al

|

correct. there's no cut out. also because of the knee padding, the vent won't fit anyway.

I have a 90 I;ll take a look and see if it has the cutout if so what do you need for it???? I have A LOT of stuff... Just not much green

That is an excellent fix!
My old wagon as that vent stock. Having had one, I'd add it, too, if I had a later car. Actually, I do have a boneyard vent I intended to install in the passenger side but I haven't gotten around to it yet.
Glad your fix went so well!

Nice job! I have an '82 245 that I'm converting from a diesel to a gas car and it has functioning vents on both the drivers and passengers sides. On the gas cars of that era Volvo mounted the ECU onto a cover plate on the passengers side(like the one you showed in the picture)which eliminated that vent. On mine I fabricated a bracket that mounts both my ECU and my cruise control box on the front firewall panel. I, of course, did this so that I could maintain that vent. The car's not quite complete yet but I believe I'll be happy with it. One of the cool things about these cars is that there are so many simple upgrades you can do.

do you have a photo of the bracket you fabricated for mounting of the ECU and CCC box?

Nice job. I have it on mine, but it wouldn't hurt to grab one from the bone yard on my next trip before the car gets to the crusher.

No one here has mentioned problems with this vent, I seem to have water leaking onto the driver's side floor when the vent is open.

Water from the cowl flows down the inner panel directly over the vent opening on its' way to the drain at the bottom of the fender. The depth of the vent door collar prevents entry when the vent is open. Both the vent door seal and the vent perimeter seal must be good.
My '81 with the old style a/c had a drivers side vent. The passenger side had a non-vented panel with a buldge to cover the lamda and CIS modules. I also relocated the modules and got a vent assembly and vented panel from the recycler.

If remember correctly this is almost always a fault of poor drainage from the cowl vent area. 99.9% of the time the tray and/or drains are clogged with leaves and such. .1% of the time it is cause by a dead animal in the drain tube.
