Intermiitant headlights? 88 240 200

Got a weird problem that happened like 3 times in the past 2 months. Start the car turn on lights and no headlights? parking lights all fine.. Turn the switch on and off,no change. Even jiggle the stick and still no headlights or flicker of them. What corrects it, I shut the car off re-start and turn the lights on and they work?
I have the big relay by the battery, but it seams it might be the little one on the fire wall, drivers side. Of course always happens when its dark. Have just checked all connectors on all relays and all are clean.
Any suggestions or thoughts?
Thanks

Does that mean you can't get the high beams to come on when pulling back on the turn signal lever?

No hi-beams either,by jiggling the stick I meant the switch(has that long stick out the back). i meant by turning the switch ever so slightly to see if it is the on-off switch. But when in this state no hi beam s either. I did check the wiring on the relay, took it off and inspected, looked ok.
      Great pictures Art.
      Thanks

        Intermittent headlights? 88 240 200 1988

        Thanks Joe,

Unfortunately there's no single point of failure including both side high and low beams, except the high/low relay by the battery. That is assuming the rest of the car doesn't lose power because of a flaky red wire between battery and the junction box next to the hilo relay. The cooldown fix time sounds like an overheated connection. That's the way it acts when the relay socket down by your foot smokes.

Art maybe the relay by my feet is on the way out then? So far its only when I start the car turn on the lights that it fails, shut the car off and re-start immediately and it works. I own a brand new hi-low relay that I found in junker many yrs ago still in Volvo package at the time i owned 70 144,relay covered all 140s and 240s so i will swap it out and see what happens, red wire looks good also but will check alittle closer on that.
          Thanks

If the lights go out and pulling back on the switch does not pull in the high beams it almost has to be the wiring going to the Upper Lower Beam Switch Relay or the relay itself. There is a connection over to the voltage distribution block next to the relay under the hood. See Arts picture and it almost has to be right in there.

Bet you find a bad connection at the relay or over on the voltage block.

              Regards,

              Paul

It did it again today, car running turn lights on parking lights ok,turn on all the way ALL lights got out even the lights on the radio got out. Shut the car off re-star immediately turns lights on and they work? removed both relays all connections are clean, junction block is clean also, red wire from battery looks good also. i found another hi-lo relay and replaced it,so now time will tell as this problem is intermittant.

                Thanks

Joe, the only way it is the hi-lo relay is if you are sure you can't "flash to pass" when this happens.

Art I did try and flick the highs on a couple of times in the past I think? They didnt work either. I will update when I find out in the next day or two as the problem started to become more evident.
                    Thanks

                      Radio going off....... 200 1988

From the Good Green Book Volvo and the new features for 1986, the year of the Big Plastic Head lights

Still points back under the Hood and the Voltage Distr block and the wiring from the other places and here is why.

The radio going off points to the Yellow Black wire from the Ignition Switch to the fuse panel 2. From there there on Fuse 1 is a yellow wire that goes to the Light Switch Terminal X. But that Voltage on the Yellow Black Wire comes from the Dist Block to the Ignition on the Red wire. But if that was bad, you would not get the car to start. So that gets ruled out.

There is a Red Wire from the battery that come into Fuse 6 of Fuel pump fame and that goes out from fuse 7 on a Gry/Red Wire to Pin 30 on the Head light Relay. And that comes from the Voltage distribution block. But you would not have voltage on the fuel pump and the car would not start and that rules that out.

There is one common voltage to both the high and low beams and that connects to the under the hood and you guessed it it comes from the distribution block to the High Low Relay under the hood. It goes to Pin 15 and there is a jumper (Blue) that goes over to 81A. If that was getting a bad contact the relay would not close because the voltage would be missing. If you have not light at all, it almost has to be either the coil inside the high low beam relay is bad or the voltage is missing on pin 15.

Trying to Scan the good green book now to help you out.

                      Regards,

                      Paul

                        Radio going off....... 200 1988

                        Hi Paul,

The lights on the radio are separately connected. If the radio itself dies, that's another story.

Hey Paul having trouble with microsoft outlook. toninjoe@aol.com is my adr.

The lights on the radio face go off when this happens. when you start the car those lights come on,when you turn the lights on the problem occurs the radio face lights go off and no other dash lights work either. I have replaced the hi-lo relay and so far 2 days with no failures. Junction block is clean except for some spider webs. the blue jumper on the relay, wire was a little worn thru from chafing on the power steering res.taped so I taped it up.
                          Thanks again
                          Art and Paul
