87 240 ZF Rack & pinion issue 200

Just washed and polishing and notice a oil spot on the drive way. It is coming from the right inner tie rod boot. I add fluid Monday but never thought to check under the car. Its been about 6 month since I added some but never a spot on the drive until today. what is the difference between the cam and ZF racks? Will they interchange. Called FCP and they get $245.00 plus a $150.00 core. The Bone yard I visit has a 91 that had about 96,000 miles and it should be the Cam rack. any other issues with this swap. I have not looked at it but it should be good. are the outer seal replaceable? Never had to fix one. Thanks, Greg

    Hi Greg,

As a unit, ZF and CAM interchange, just not their component parts. Peel back the boot with a catch pan under it. If that's where the fluid went, the rack needs to come out. Some may tell you of sealant you can add to the fluid, but I have no experience with these.

At the yard, do the same thing. Peel back the boot. And check out http://www.jorgenauto.com/.

If you want a project, maybe you could rebuild a rack from the yard. Perhaps someone else on the board has some rack rebuilding experience.

      Thanks Art,
I called Boston Volvo Village and they told me the is a installation kit to use the Cam rack and both the kit the rack has been dropped. Also the aftermarket racks usually come with the kit spacer and clamps to use the cam rack in place of the ZF rack. Also called the junk yard and they get 150.00 but for me $100.00. It may be little cheaper when I get there and pull the part. I will be time & money ahead to Get one at autozone for $170.00 with lifetime warranty. Never thought about putting something in to swell the seals. I saved the bottle for AT-205 RE-SEAl. This stuff really helped some tractor seals for my Dad. The Parts story that I got this from closed 15 year ago. If I can find some may as well try. Greg

found some At Allied Auto parts - 205 Re-seal for $10.45. If I remember correctly this stuff stopped a leak in my dad's tractor. Got some and trying it. Also got a rack ordered and I think I acted to quick. I would like to see how the re Seal works. Greg

Be sure and flush the pump, reservoir, and hoses out real well before you install the new rack. The stop leak stuff can make the seals in the new rack swell and wear out faster.

The liquid fix is temporary at best, so buying a rack will not go to waste.

Thanks Dan, Your are right. Made a mistake on the stop leak and the rack should be in later this morning along with a wind shield. Just did not expect two big expenses this month and the Turbo bug has been planted. Greg
