Converting Manual Windows to Power 200

What’s involved in converting from manual to power operated windows?

I have a ’92 parts car coming my way that has power windows. My ’86 does not. I know, more weight and complexity, but the life partner will be more likely to want to drive it in lieu of the Mini Cooper this winter if it has such luxuries.

Would it be easier to swap the whole door rather than fumbling around shoulder deep in eight car doors? I’ve never hung a door. The door and ignition keys already don’t match. Also the ’92 doors have better rubber scrapers and the extra seal around the perimeter. I’ll already be swapping funky door handles. Would I have to run a pair of wires to each door all running through the driver’s door, plus a relay and to the fuse panel or is it prewired? I’m capable but is it way too much hassle to be bothered with?

I’ll have more hair-brained questions as I get deeper into this…

Thanks,

Will

Its' a bit of a pain but doable.Don't change the doors unless you are going to repaint the car. Also you will need the armrests front and rear along with the door panels. One more thing, when changing to pw you will need to add the "blue" screw holder to your old door. The manual armrest attaches with one screw but the pw armrest has 2.This will be more obvious when you remove the door panels on both cars.Fishing the wires through the doors is also alot of fun.Don't cut any wires!

the manual arm rest have 2 screws and the pw armrest has 3 this applies to the front. To add the 3rd screw you will need to transfer the "blue star thing" that will hold the screw in place. You will see what I'm talking about when you remove the door panel.

Thanks. I'm sure it will be self expanatory.

I'm still keen on swapping doors. How much worse could the wind noise be, right? :-) However life partner isn't keen on any more body panels being a different color than is absolutely necessary.

I just replaced 2 doors on a 92GL.Front and rear driver side, color was close enough, will paint entire car later. The fron door lined up well front to back.It is "leaning "in a little at the front top, near the mirror. The right rear door lines up fine BUT the gap between the doors down the center of the car is too wide. The rear door needs to move foward about 1/4 in.Can't figure it out so now I will have a body shop look at it.It is very tricky messing with the doors. On top of all this I needed to transfer the pw motors, the tracks, lock, mirror and even the glass only because I wanted matching date codes.

If you get all the parts from the donor car, it should be straigtforward. I wouldn't swap the doors. You have to remove the glass and scissor assembly and swap them with the motor. There should be a complete wiring harness in the donor car that when removed will yield all the relays and associated wiring. I hope you have the wiring diagrams for both cars, that will make it easier. You will also have to swap out the arm rests. All that being said, when I had the opportunity to swap out the roll ups in my '87, I opted not to because they are simple and reliable and last forever.

It's not a bad job to swap the manual and power units--I did it on my '87 240. I wouldn't try to replace the doors. Old Sven hangs 'em right, with his $100K machine (big soft suction cups, adjust by 1mm increments for yaw, pitch and roll). Hard to replicate that on you own--you get hard closing, more wind noise, ask me how I know. I think you can swap the improved seals over.
