One GOOD Volvo parts department... 700 1989

After a very discouraging trip to a local PNP, I resorted to phone ordering a couple of parts from our local Volvo dealer. The first order was for a gasket for the oil fill cap (P/N 940096). Not in stock, but ordered, and arrived within 2 business days as promised. Less than $5!

Later, ordered the tool kit holder clip (in stock) for the wagon, P/N 1224832-4 ($0.50) and the clamp for the console armrest (not in stock) P/N 6847246-3 ($1.12). Again, arrived as promised. $1.72 is a cheap fix for two annoying rattles.

Thanks to the BB for the part number on the tool kit clamp. Maybe the other numbers will help someone else.

Anyway, I can't call my local dealer anything but courteous and cooperative.

OTOH, my son just bought an '89 Mercedes 190...the local dealership would only quote a price to order a speedometer cable, wanted payment in advance, and would NOT give him the part number, "as a matter of company policy." He found the correct part at a local import car parts store for half the dealership price!

Once again, YMMV, I guess.

I got tired of buying Volvo Oil Cap gaskets.. They seem like they harden up after only 2 years and then I get that hint of oil on the valve cover. I went to Home Depot and bought a large rubber gasket for toilet fixtures. I had to trim the O.D. a bit. It's been holding up for 5+ years now.
Nice to find a dealership Parts guy that actually helps.

I also have an MB 190E. They're referred to as 201 chassis cars with either a 102 (4 cyl) motor, or a 103 (6 cyl) motor.

If you haven't already, check out www.MercedesShop.com

It has a very active forum. It's run by a Mercedes indie shop, and their parts guy, Phil, is FANTASTIC.

    Enjoy the car.

My neice bought a fixerupper 190e for her first car (84 I think), cracked it up, rebuilt the front half, and used the mercedesshop.com forum for help. Now she works in a MB dealership (not near Harryl).

Thanks to Jeff and Art! I visited the (renamed) site, and I've bookmarked it in both Volvo and Mercedes folders. Good stuff.

        Thanx,

        Harry
