Where to find a crankshaft gear for a 95 940 900 1995

The crankshaft gear on my 95 940 needs to be replaced. The edge that interlocks with the harmonic balancer has become sheared, and thus, no longer interlocks with the harmonic balancer...My first timing belt change is not going so well. :(

I saw on FCP, Eeuroparts, & IPD that they only sell crankshaft gears but only for models up to 1992. I am pretty sure that these would not be compatible with my car. Does any one know where I can find a used or new one?

Many Thanks

Post an ad on Turbobricks under Wanted. Several T-brickers make their money buy pulling parts on request.

the only difference is tooth shape on the three gears (round for 93-, square for pre93). if you really want to go with a new crankshaft gear, then buy the one for '92 from fcp and go to a junkyard get the other two gears (a camshaft gear and an intermediate shaft gear) from a pre-93. viola! square tooth setup.

you can easily fix it yourself and save the 45 dollars.

carefully grin down to flat the remainder of the nub. then get a very fine point center punch and make a center punch hole in the MIDDLE of the erased nub.

get a 1/16 drill bit or something bigger but not bigger than 1/8 and make your first drill into the center. perhaps 3/8 depth max.

keep using larger drill bits until you are 1/32 or better 1/64 smaller than a 3/16 drill size.

get an old 3/16 bit and dremel OFF a 1/2" from the shank.

now fit this stub into the hole. at a 1/64 less it may or may not fit. the idea is to make the hole 'just' big enough so the 3/16 fits but snugly requiring a bit of force to place it in.

once done you use a bit of glue in the bottom of the hole or not. this nub is for alignment and will if the crank bolt is torqued right never have any real force against it.

this method works perfectly and the 3/16 fits into the balance slot with no slop.

You might try a good Volvo specialty dismantler like Voluparts.

BTW - I believe the difference between the early years and the late years is square cut teeth on the early versions vs rounded cut teeth on the later. Make sure you get the correct one for your car AND the correct matching belt.

Hang in there. It'll get better.

Thanks for everyone's response. I really appreciate it. I ordered the part from Tasca. Even with the the absurd shipping charge for such a small part, it still is $15 cheaper than what the local dealer wanted to charge me.

I never knew exactly the difference between the pre 93 cars and the 93-95 redblocks. All I knew was that timing belts were more expensive! Why did Volvo switch from square cut teeth to the round cut teeth? I know the timing belt replacement is greater--100k opposed to 50k--so I'm assuming the cut teeth produce more wear on the belt.

I would try the punching in a drill bit in replace of the nub on the gear, but I don't feel confident at this point that I would successfully pull it off.

Thanks again.

Round-tooth belt change interval 900 1995

"I know the timing belt replacement is greater--100k opposed to 50k--so I'm assuming the cut teeth produce more wear on the belt."

That 100K interval seems to be something of a myth. Check the replacement interval given in your owner's manual. My '93 940 (round toothed belt) manual says 50K for all except B230 FD. I've never found out what makes the "D" easier on the belt, if that's the reason for its 100K interval.

And be sure to torque your new crank gear to spec:
Stage I 44 ft lbs
Stage II another 60° tighter

I recommend the "Rope Method" (it's more than a trick) to counter-hold the crankshaft for that 60° of final tightening, as opposed to $50± for a tool you may use only once or twice.

I have not messed up a timing belt job but I have found a lot that were. I found one with a smished key that looked like a crack had started. I believe these are made using a powdered sintering method.

For the timing belt, start a new post if there are questions.

I got one from a Volvo dealership via FCPGroton.com, about $45.00 years ago.

Also try Tasca (Volvo/Ford)and ask for the internet price.
