Magnetic Drain Plug Torx setting 700

I have a 1990 740 with about 297k miles, so I thought it would be good to use a magnetic drain plug (iPd) to catch extra debris.

However, I hear if you over tighten it, you can strip the oil pan because the magnetic plug is slight shorter. Does anyone know the Torx setting in oreder to have it tight, but not over tight.

Thanks in Advance

Something I think about every time I change oil. 700

Tail end of a 2000 mile road trip with the wife and kids, not in a Volvo, looked behind me and saw clouds of smoke. Says I to my wife, "Some poor dude has some real engine problems". Looked on ether side and determined that poor dude was me. Lost the drain plug but the car still had oil pressure. A very friendly WV trooper brought me oil and a choice of ill fitting drain plugs to get me back on the road. Well the question is did I not tighten it enough or not at all? I'll never know.

I got a drain plug from IPD and was disappointed with the wimpy magnetic strength. Still using it though and I have not changed my torquing and it has to be very close to 44 ft-lbs, (Ref. FAQ.)

What you will find on the magnet is ring fuzz. Actually microscopic scrapings from the cylinder wall. New engine generate gobs of it. You should see very little, just enough to make the magnet look dirty.

If you use the copper sealing washers, it'll be hard to wreck the drain pain. I have a big ol' 1" Craftsman Combo Wrench that I use for the drain plug. I just give that a good tug to tighten it up.

It does not take much torque. To get the right value, use a 1/4 inch ratchet wrench and hold it midway along the handle. Torque snugly and you'll be all set.
