whooooooosh sound upon starting in 745. strange. 700 1991

My 1991 B230F makes the strangest sound when I start it up. It typically makes the sound only after it is warmed up to some degree (has been run within a couple of hours). It's sounds like a vacuum leak but it's quite loud, only happens when warm and is only audible when starting.

Any guesses?

sounds like your main cooling fan, most of mine have made this noise upon start when hot/warm,

      That certainly could be it!

It is quite hard to pinpoint even with my head under the hood as my wife starts the car. At first, I thought it was the starter. The sound is faintly metallic, like bearings that need grease. It is quite loud - and a little embarrassing when starting it up, if I can admit it to my fellow Volvoholics.

No noise after it starts even if engine is rev'd? Sometimes it is hard to pinpoint the source of a sound. Try using a flex plastic tube to your ear and point around with the other end. This can often find a sound.

Rather than have us guess could you provide a little more info. Have you opened the hood, stuck your head in to look, listen and observe to try and trace the source. If it so loud it should be obvious.
