AMP light on after alternator replacement?? 140-160 1971

I just replaced my alternator with a Remy brand. All 4 wires connected to the correctly labeled posts, very simple job. So why is my AMP light on when my key is OFF???

Thanks,
Wayne

If it were a Bosch alternator, it'd be that your rectifier diode is bad. But a Remy...? Not familiar with that one.

    What's a remy brand exactly?

        So my question still stands.
Where should I start looking to solve this?

        Thanks,

We kinda guessed that remy = Delco Remy, but what model is it?

What markings are on all the terminals? i.e., four typical ones are: B+ B- D DF

The last time I fitted a Delco Remy to anything it was on a truck motor & had a single wire connection, just one to take the charge to the battery. Some other were there but optional.

If the amp light stays on when the key is removed, you have a faulty rectifier diode; or a bad connection either inside - or to - the alternator. Confirm that none of the wires other than the ground wire are touching ground; then confirm that the ground is solid. If that doesn't do it, have the alternator tested - this can be done on the car; or it can be done on the bench at your local auto electric shop.

Every single Volvo (sample size about two dozen) I've worked on that has been fitted with a Delco alternator has had alternator problems at some point.

There were two wires mounted to the ground on my old one and I transferred those over the same way to the new one. Should there be only one wire on the ground post?

            Thanks again,

I think the best thing would be to have the charging system tested by a local automotive electrical shop while the alternator is still in place. Otherwise, we're all just guessing.
